Is this a decent deal/set up?
« on: 27 Jan 2004, 12:53 pm »
I am looking for a used laptop for web use.  My friend has a work mate that has this computer for sale and I want to know if I should buy or stay away.  I know Compacq is not usually the first on anyones list but hey, it's cheap.  I am finding out the screen size.  Is the burner worth it?  Will this allow me to make comp discs?
Thank,s all.

Here's the spec's on that laptop we spoke of:

Compaq Presario Laptop, with:

AMD K6 433 MHz processor (Pentium II equivalant)
160MB RAM
4 GB Hard Drive
On-Board Modem
1 USB Port
1 PCMCIA Slot
Windows 98 SE (Second Edition)
Microsoft Works, may have MS Word (he's not for sure)
Targus Laptop Case

$200.00

Also available for $50, an external CD Burner that connects via the USB Port.  Includes Cable to connect to the Laptop.

Let me know if you're interested, I can bring it home one night and you can take a look at it.  It's in good shape, he's never had a problem with it, he simply wanted a more powerful Laptop for gaming, etc.

Max:

Take a look at some of the completed items over at ebay.  On K6 laptops, you will find that many are going for half that price.  But I would place a high value on being able to play with it and make sure it's functioning properly before you shell out. .

I'd give between 150-200 for it with the CD burner.  If he hasn't had a lot of problems with it and it looks to be in good condition... and you get to try it before you buy it... I'd say it's a good deal.

Just be sure you check how long the battery actually lasts, all the keys work, it works for what you'll be doing on it primarily, etc. and I think you'll be fine.  But, 200 would still be my top price even with the CD burner.  And yes, that's what you'd use to make CD's.  See if he has the CD burning software that came with it as well.... of if he has something better...

Good luck!

Thanks for your help guys.  I will check out ebay for a reference and totally understand the premium for being able to check it out, no shipping, etc.

:x well, it was a very nice and cared for computer but the fan on the mother board is quite loud.   Can't have that on my lap while listening to  music  :nono:
