Is there an easy way to backup a music CD with XP Pro and not need to buy some software?  Now I rip the CD with Media Player using a lossless format, then convert it back onto the new CD.  Besides being inefficient, it adds a second break between tracks.  I used to use the free old version of Adaptec / Roxio EZCD that came with my CD ROM, but it stopped working when I upgraded to XP.

Thanks!

You might give EAC - Exact Audio Copy a try. It will extract and write exact images of your disk. I havn't used it's write capability but it is on the menu. The price is right, freeware. Well postcard ware actually but nearly free.

Mike, what's the diff between extracting the ind tracks and doing an image?
Also, what is all the stuff eac says about eliminating pre track gaps and track indexes when you do an image?  Thanx Sean

EAC never supported any of the burners I used.

I'd suggest NERO.  Odds are it came with your burner.  Otherwise, you can buy it all over the net for $10 or so.  Or do a search for Fuerio, which is closely related and comes in freeware form, I think.

1 backup copy per CD is LEGAL.  However, due to goofy lobbying and uninformed people (as for technical stuff), 1 backup copy of DVDs is ILLEGAL.  The DMCA was passed by congressmen who would be clueless if someone told them to "go format your harddrive".  Such a technical law should be passed by people w/ the technical background. . .that's why congress usually delegates its power on such issues. . .hence the FDA, FAA, etc.

It works great with my Philips D28. If you can get EAC to work it's
worth it.

EAC totally hangs on my system.  This is a documented problem for some systems.

Also looks like you need to copy to computer first, then copy to CDR.  I would like to copy from CD reader to CD writer directly (I have 2 drives).

I have used CLONE CD to copy direct from a reader to a writer without any problems. Free download. Check it out:

It appears that CloneCD is no longer available.

It looks like Clone CD is now owned by SlySoft. It's available but the cost is $39.00. For that much money Nero is a much better choice IMO. Clone CD Page.

Sean,

Extracting a track is just what it sounds like, a single track. An image file is a single large file in combination with a .CUE file which is a text file with the track layout. The img/cue files work great if you are trying to make a low jitter copy using the Yamaha burner. I extract the disk to an image and have Nero write the file using AQ Master mode. IMO the advantage of using an image is an improved chance that the file will be once contiguous block of data and this may reduce jitter since the disk drive isn't seeking as much. This assumes plenty of free disk space of course.

I have never used the options to eliminate the pre-gap and indexes. I suspect the pre-gap is the two seconds normally found between tracks on audio CD's. If you were planning on making a mix disk and wanted gapless fades this might be the way to go.

When I first posted I though I was missing something about XP Pro and Media Player -- like gee it should be able to do a disk copy from CD to CD.  From the posts so far, it appears that I did not miss anything and a third party utility is necessary to make a security backup (just in case the original is eaten by one of my dogs or crushed under a truck).

When I burn cd to cd-r which is very fast process I use
CD Creator 5/Disc Copier, but to me EAC always sounds better.

Do you know if there is an installation program for EAC?  It appears that you just run the exe after you extract it and the other files to whatever directory from the downloaded zip file.  If there is an installation program, then maybe that is my problem.

Yes there is a setup program. Uncompress the zipped file than open
the EAC file folder, open the EAC program in the file folder and it should guide you from there.

Yes "EAC.exe".  However, this is the executable, not a setup program that puts something in the registy, puts the program in the Program Files directory, gives you an icon, and all that.  It is just like in DOS days when you execute the downloaded file itself.

Hi all,

I watched this play for a few days in Audio Central, but have now moved it to Square Circle for a bit more play with the folks that frequent this area as it's nw dormant a few days.

Well, I learned something from it, but assume something more may be added by computer cognecenti here.

Regards, TCG.
