SongCenter owners - do you run it full range?
« on: 19 Feb 2010, 02:14 pm »
Want to know if anyone runs their existing SC as full range or do you cut them off at 50, 60, 70 Hz?

If you do, how do they sound?  Do you get deep enough performance in your opinion?

Keep in my mind I once owned the V3 "monster" center, so I'm spoiled.

Hoping to put in Songtowers in the HT and I cannot place a standard height ST in the center position.

Anybody wanna buy some Aerials?

I cut my SC off at 80hz. I've never tried running it at full range. I have a SongSub which was fairly easy to blend (IMHO) with my Song* setup.

I noticed the low end is "spec'd" at 49 Hz so maybe 50 would be a safe xover point.

Crossovers aren't brick walls, so I dunno if 50 would be safe.  Information would still get through, possibly causing distortion.  If its spec'd at 49Hz, I'd cross at no less than 60Hz.  Just my $0.02.

For what its worth, I cross at 70hz, just to be safe.  Never really thought about my center's "deep" performance, but I'll pay close attention tonight and let you know.  It sounds more natural than my old Rocket "Bigfoot" center and Def Tech center with sub (forget the model), though.  But there is no way it compares to that "monster" center you have (had?).  That is just too cool!   :thumb:

I'm betting that the 49 Hz number is a ballpark and the speaker has output below that so I'd live more on the wild side and push that thing as low as I could. :nono:

I'd like a twin 10" woofered, twin mid, 3 tweeter center (straight and angled to the sides) full blown cantankerous SOB!!!

I have 450 watts going into the center nowadays so let's fire it up!! :flame:

Personally, I'd just cross it over at 80Hz.  I had a VMPS RM30C, which is spec'ed pretty low, but still ran it at 80HZ.  I think having a sub produce the 80 and below lessens what the center has to do.

I recommend trying both full range and other settings (such as 80Hz), though, to see what you like.  The opening to The Fellowship of the Ring is good for this, as is the lobby shooting scene in the Matrix.

The 49Hz is the F3 of the speaker (3db down point).  So you would want to set the subwoofer crossover higher for a good blend above this point.

So you'd have to redesign that thing to get me 20 Hz performance?!

Well, I for one think that you nailed the crossover for the colors on the wall and carpeting!

Which veneer finish is on your speakers? It is gorgeous!

I cross mine over at 80hz. I did this for two reasons, one it sounds good, so I have no reason to mess with it. And two, the crossover in my PS2100 is fixed at 80hz for 2.1 channel listening, so I have everything else set to 80hz. I wanted to avoid a situation where in 2.1 I was optimizing the sub for 80hz, and then I went all wonky and threw in a 60hz crossover point for home theater (which would be the lowest I'd go considering the 49hz f3). I have AVA Double 240 running all those channels, and its plenty enough.
