Salk Trial Period?
« on: 3 May 2010, 12:50 am »
I've seen a bunch of posts on messageboards which mention a 30-day trial period of Salk speakers, but I see no mention on the website. Does it still exist, and if so, what is the exact policy?

Also, can somebody give me an approximate shipping cost to the S.F. Bay Area for a pair of SongTowers? (accuracy within 20% is fine)

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan.  I have Songtowers and am El Cerrito, CA (next to Berkeley).  Shipping was $156 via Fedex Ground.  Martin.

I believe the policy is stil in effect, but it only holds for standard veneer.

Thanks Dennis. In the (I'm sure extremely unlikely) event that I decided to return them, I assume I would be responsible for the shipping costs both ways?

Hi,

Well I guess Jim could take a loss on shipping as well as having the speakers returned.  Sorry for being a bit funny but Jim sells a very good speaker at a very reasonable price.

I imported my speakers from the US to Australia and I'm really happy with them.  You live in the US why don't you search out someone who has a pair to demo them for you?

I just wanted clarification on the policy. I certainly don't feel Jim should be out anything if I decided to do a return.

I'm working on it, believe me.  :D
I found somebody who owns SongTowers 30 miles away, but he's too busy to give a demo in the near future. But even after getting a demo it's still hard to know how it will sound with my room/placement/equipment. I have high hopes though!

Hi,

I'd definitely wait until you have the opportunity to hear the speakers.  I've been let down a number of times by hyperbole on the internet regarding components I bought.

Mind you it isn't that much of a risk buying a salk sound speaker but hifi is such personal taste its best to err on the side of caution.

Good luck.

You will not find a return policy on our web site because it is highly variable.  On SongTowers with a standard finish, for example, a 30-day return is just fine.  We can easily find a deserving new home for them in a matter of days.

On higher priced models and models with custom finishes, this is not always possible.  You may love raisin maple (name any veneer), but not everyone else will.  And when people order these speakers, part of the appeal for many is being able to choose their own finish.  We can't afford to inventory speakers until someone wants the same speaker in the same finish.  That is one of the trade-offs with this level of customization.  If our speakers were only available in your choice of three finishes, it would not be an issue.

While I only recall one instance where someone wanted to return one of our higher priced models during the initial 30-day period (I warned him that his amp would not drive them in the first place).  We simply listed them for sale and refunded the purchase price once they were sold.  In this case, they sold before we even got them back.

In all cases, we work with each owner to make sure they are ordering a speaker that will work for them.  That cuts down on problems in the first place.  And we work with them to make certain they have some avenue to return them (within 30 days) if things don't work out.

We have had very few speakers returned over the years.  And in most cases, the motivation for the return was financial hardship, not a problem with the speakers.  In all cases, we have managed to make refunds, whether an immediate refund in the case of lower priced speakers in standard veneers, or via proceeds from a sale of custom speakers (in a relatively short period of time).

I hope this makes sense.

Jim, that makes perfect sense and sounds like a very reasonable policy. Thanks for the clarification!
