Foobar and Windows 7- Any set up hints?
« on: 25 Jan 2010, 03:03 pm »
I'm in the process of setting up Foobar2000 on my new laptop which runs Windows 7. Coming from a machine running XP, there are a lot of differences between the 2 operating systems. Newest version of Foobar (1.0) is installed, output will be FLAC files via USB. Any set up hints?

Thanks in advance.

It seems to be generally accepted that running WASAPI gives the best playback results.  It's the first operating system that I've used so I can't speak to it being this or that compared to another.  But I'm getting very good sound with it.

I've got WASAPI running now, thanks. Seems there are a lot of different plug ins available to use with 7. Found a really cool skin for the UI, much better then anything I'd found before.

I used this (not Windows 7 specific, but GUI works anyway) to make Foobar very iTunes-like.

My Foobar looks like this now.

The link to get foo_browser.dll seems to be broken and I can't find anywhere to get it?  I even found a statement somewhere in Wiki that said it is no longer updated like its no longer needed.  So I continued to follow the instructions up to Step 11 when it wants to use it.  Is there something else used in place of foo_browser.dll?  Thanks

Well, I use V0.9.6.3 not version 1.0.  I just copied my foo browser (220kb) to my drop box (kind of like an FTTP site to share stuff).  If you send me your email via PM I'll invite you to the drop box and you can have it.

Thank you sir.  I'm using v0.9.6.9 but the issue is that I can't find the file.  But if I can get it from you I should be good to go.

Using this configuration sometimes I get album art to show up for "whats playing now" in the playlist and sometimes not.  Some of my album art is the folder with the FLAC files and some is in a separate folder called Album Art.  At first I thought it was showing me album art that's kept with the files but not ones where the art is kept in the other folder.  But I added the album art .jpg to the FLAC file folder and used mp3tag to replace the album art from the separate folder to the .jpg in the FLAC file folder.  But now I notice that the problem is sporadic, one time showing album art for a song and then another time not showing it.  Does anyone have an idea why that might be?

I thought Foobar will only show album art if it is embedded as metadata in the individual FLAC files, but I could be wrong.

Thanks ted_b and that may very well be the case.  And I guess I thought that is what I was doing when I select all of the FLAC files of an album folder in mp3tag and add the album art to them and save.  If that isn't how to embed them as metadata to the file then I don't know how to do it.  But then there is the issue that sometimes one will show up and another time that same one won't.

After about a week or so of use without issue, today the playback speed hasn't been constant and the signal's dropped out at times. This only occurs when WASAPI is configured as Foobar's output device. If I change the output device to DS I don't have either of the above problems. The buffer size is currently 1550ms. I've tried different buffer sizes within the recommended range with similar results. I've restarted Foobar as well as Windows a few times each. Any thoughts?

With regards to album art: I remove all of the artwork from the metadata and drop it into the folder that contains the album.  Foobar seems to display up to three jpeg files, called front, back, and disc.  I use the album art pictures for front and back, and usually create a disc jpeg from the All Music Guide review.  With those files in the album folder and no artwork in the metadata, Foobar creates a very nice display.  My Foobar ends up looking something like this:
