I have the original green boards in my Stratps Monos. In fact, mine are the the ones shown on the website, as I did the photos of them for the site. Should I upgrade to red?

I have a Stratos driving HT-3's and it has been on for 6 years or so.  Yes the light does stay on.  When I walk into the dark room it kind of says "I'm here ready to go, why don't you have a seat and relax"  :D
The Stratos is big, figure 20" x 20" 50+ pounds. You can also get the Stratos built into the Khartago case to save space.  You can even get the Khartago supped up.

What preamp will you be using?  The Stratos runs cool but I think the Khartago runs hotter.  I'd suggest some footers to raise the preamp 2-3" up if you have to stack.
If you call Klaus have your check book ready and know your balance

I suppose I'll have to have a talk with Klaus prior to my purchase as I really would like the smaller case for the amp.  I'll post a pic tonight of my setup, but space is a premium.  Part of my issue is that I run an Onkyo 876 for the HT side of things and that thing gets HOT!!  I leave a lot of space around it and nothing can really sit above it as even the shelf 5" above it gets very hot.

The preamp I have coming is a Rogue Audio Perseus.  I have high hopes for it's sound, so I hope it doesn't disappoint me.  If I like the thing, I'll need to find the "right" amp to pair with it.  I hope that right amp will either be an Odyssey or McCormack.  I don't really have anything else on the radar.

I would say absolutely go for it.

Klaus is extremely easy to work with, and is very honest and straightforward.

The amplifiers come with a 20 year warrenty; and they are seriously great.

I run my Kismetros amplifiers on a pair of GR LSs, and even at very loud levels they don't usually get hot at all.

Slightly warm at most.

Of course running them at 4 OHMS will likely cause more heat.

I would likely spend the extra money for the Stratos Stereo Extreme though. It will give you two tranformers, giving you plenty of power into 4 OHMS.

Also remember that these amplifiers offer excellent current capability which in my experiance is just as, if not more important, then wattage rating depending on the speaker.

Klaus really helped me out a couple of months ago. I had bought a used pair of amplifiers that were tampered with.

I sent them back to Klaus to get checked out, and ended up completely gutting them and upgrading them extensively.

Klaus was extremely reasonable with the pricing, and turned them over once the parts were in very quickly.

Extremely satisfied customer, and very happy with my babies.

Also, does anyone know if the front face plate can be easily replaced?

Yes, it's not hard to replace the front faceplate.  Although I had to play around with the little LED lights to get them to shine correctly.  I'd love it if the amp lights could match the Candela lights.

I third the monoblocs. Better to have a pair of the plain vanilla Stratos monoblocs then even an Extremed stereo Stratos. The biggest advantage is that each channel now has its own dedicated power transformer and power supply, so there's no way that whatever is happening in one channel will ever affect the other channel in the slightest way. You can really hear the dif. Klaus once told me that the single biggest jump in sound quality is obtaining by going to the monoblocs.
Far as power reserve, I'm betting that the Extremed monoblocs will easily double their power into 4 ohms, so something like 400-450 watts is more like it. I'm about to Extreme my monoblocs, as I'm running Magnepans. Have never heard the amps complain, but I'm wanting to be very sure... :icon_lol:
But if you can't do monoblocs, do as much capacitance as you can, and it'll be good. The Stratos is already an overachiever.

I'm back with more questions...

Thanks for the recommendations and I'm sure the mono-blocks would be the way to go, but I just don't think I can get the room for them.

Now for my questions:

1)  What does "red board" really mean to me?

2)  Have there been any significant upgrades over the last 1-3 years that should make me want a newer build date?

3)  Does the silver face plate have some sort of anodizing or is it just brushed aluminum.  I think I see a very shiny surface that seems anodized.

Thanks!

"Red Board" is just describing which circuit board that the amplifiers are using I believe. Green was the original, then Red, and now I believe Black is the current best (I could be wrong).

I believe that the Silver face plate is anodized as well, I have the silver face plate; its not mirror finish, but it has a little bit of a shine too it.

As for upgrades in relationship to the age of whatever amplifier you are looking at; I would again strongly suggest calling Klaus.

I know that Klaus fully supports his products, but I bought a pair of monoblocks used from someone locally. Upon inspection, to me, a non-professional, they looked absolutely perfect; they were in fact FUBAR.

They were so FUBAR; when hooked up to my preamp I was getting electrocuted from all components connected to system.

At least give Klaus a chance to sell you some B-stock amplifiers that will come with a 20 year warranty, and be guaranteed to work beautifully as soon as you get them.

I apologize if you have already spoken with him.  :duh:

I have not spoken to Klaus as of yet.  I guess that is the first thing I should do as many of stated "call Klaus".

I still haven't received the new preamp, so I don't know if I'm in need of an Odyssey amp yet or not.  I've been watch used Stratos amps and there are a few going for decently low prices.  I'm EXTREMELY anal about my audio gear, so I want something in nearly new condition.  B-stock sounds workable...

Thanks.

To update this thread...

I'm trying to finalize a deal on a pair of Stratos Extreme SE mono-blocks.  I hope they work some magic for me as I couldn't be happier with my new preamp and my existing Parasound amp sounds wonderful.

Once I get the mono-blocks, I'll update the thread with my thoughts. :D

Anyone have additional observations regarding the difference between the stereo (Stratos glass ceiling, in my case) and monoblock versions? Soundstaging? Timbre?

I'm upgrading to Kismet monoblocks shortly...

TJ, you've quickly updated your Systems listing, I was wondering which Parasound amp these amps replaced.

Hopefully you can post some further observations after you have lived with them a bit.

Steve,

They replaced a Parasound NewClassic 2250.

Observations...

I've been home sick that past two days, so I've had a lot of listening time with them.  I first connected them up around 1:00pm yesterday.  To be honest, they didn't sound all that great.  I could hear a smoothness in them that was nice, but there was a sort of odd distortion sound to some of my favorite tracks.  In some ways I heard good, and others not so good.

However, I think it was around 6:00pm that night, things sounded very different.  I even replayed the tracks I heard some strangeness on, and everything was now just fine.  I don't know why this would have happened, but it was very clear to me.

So after listening most of today, I have to say that these amps are nothing short of spectacular.  I used to hear what I called "cheapness" in my old setup.  The addition of my Perseus preamp helped this some, but it was still there.  I don't know how to explain it, but it may have been a lack of articulate bass, a grainy sound in the upper midrange, or both?  What I was missing before the Odyssey's came was a little air in the treble, maybe some midrange smoothness, and my bass had a rounded lack of detail sound.  The Odysseys fixed all of this.  The treble is extended, crystal clear, and has a touch of air.  The midrange is smoother and detailed and I can't detect any of the "cheapness" sound I've been plagued with for the last few months.  The bass is unbelievable!  I used to run a sub for music, but since the Perseus came, I've been listening with out it.  Now it's like it's back.  The bass is full, detailed, and very balanced sounding right up into the midbass.  The bass has a perfect weight to it, as if being produced by much larger driver.  I don't miss my sub at all.  (Please understand that I'm no bass head and my sub was used mostly to correct room modes and it was EQ'd perfectly flat and sounded wonderful).

Another contribution the Odysseys have produced is a deeper sound stage and the last place the music seems to come from is my speakers.  Depending upon the recording, you'd have a hard time locating the speakers.  The sound seems to mainly come from behind my speakers and I have a gigantic wall of sound with fantastic imaging and separation.  Everything sounds so coherent and real with the most subtle details showing through.  My Salk speakers have never sounded this good.  The more I listen, the better it seems to get.  I just keep finding new things to appreciate in nearly every track I play.

For the last year, I've had a sound in mind that I wanted to achieve.  I have never been closer to achieving that sound than right now.  It's amazing that the things I would have tweaked from adding in the Perseus have been added by the Odyssey amps.  I could not be more pleased with the system synergy I have right now.  Everything I listen to seems to have a little magic to the sound.  I am completely floored!
