Altec Lansing 1407A - 4ohm load?
« on: 31 Jan 2010, 06:02 pm »
I am looking for a robust but affordable sub amp for my HT.

I have found locally an old (aren't they all?) Altec Lansing mono amp of 75w.

Can this beast drive a 4ohm sub, or will I pop it?

Thanks guys,

JoshK

A quick look at the manual
http://www.altecpro.com/pdfs/vintage/ElectronicsAndTransformers/powerAmps/1407A%20Power%20Amplifier%20Manual.pdf

suggests it should be ok into 4 ohms with the transformer output.  Doesn't look to be rated into 4 with the direct output.

So I could feed this the sub output from my Pioneer receiver, and it should be OK?

For $30, certainly worth taking a crack at, vs $200 for a new plate amp.

Picking it up Wednesday, we will see if it does the trick as a sub amp.

I have picked it up, and it does work.  I briefly hooked it up to the direct output, just to be sure it does work, and it does.  As I have a 4 ohm load, and it is only rated at 8ohms for the direct output, I assume I may damage it, if I use it that way very long.

I am looking for how to wire it, for my load.

I am using the phono input.  I want to use the transformer 4 ohm output.

I have the pdf, but cannot tell how to wire it right - I have never used an amp with different ways to wire it etc.

HELP!   :duh:

Connecting the speaker load is pretty simple.  First, make SURE there is a strap (or a jumper wire) from the "Direct Out" terminal to the adjacent "OT In" terminal.  Next, connect one speaker wire to the "Common" terminal.  Connect the other speaker wire to the "Tap 1" terminal.  That's it!

The "Phono" input will work, but Altec cautions you that there is no level control affecting the Phono Input.  You will have to control the audio level prior to the Altec amplifier.

Hope this answers your questions.

Thanks Bill, perfect.

I just had never seen a strap like that, so I did not know how it was meant to be used.

The amp runs fine, and can produce decent bass with the sub.

I think the Altec will be perfect for my downstairs music system (running 2 OB 12's in series at a total load of 8ohm).

For the HT, I am going to find a more powerful unit!
