VR4 Gen3 Question
« on: 9 Apr 2010, 08:16 pm »
I have a pair of the gen3 HSE's and was wondering if anyone has ever tried to veneer these for better looks?  Another reason is that i'd like to play with the porting(stuff with batting) and change the bass
tightness, which can't be done with the socks installed.

Hi Russe41,

I also had this idea once.

To veneer the VR 4 HSE is not so easy unless you have a friend who is handy at these things.

You can unscrew the bottomplate, take a hairföhne and warm the glue untill you can easily take of the cloth to reach the flare. Than stuff some dacron and tune the bass to be tight.

If this is to much, you can also deside to go for the VR 4 SR mk III. :D

Good luck.

Funny you mention this as I had the same fantasy a few months ago. I even went so far as to modify a photo using corel draw and overlayed some burl wood veneer. I talked with a friend of mine who is a cabinet maker and he said it would be difficult to make the veneer stick well around those rounded corners so I gave up on the idea. Besides I love listening to my speakers so much I don't think I could sacrifice having them leave my living room for as long as the project would take :D

Hi Gary,

You are a artist.

This picture is very well done and the VR 4 looks great.
Let's ask WGH for the costs see at: http://www.wghwoodworking.com/

I found a photo of an original HSE and veneering it would be a difficult project. Design wise the top cap would just have to go but the rounded corners stay, they are helpful in controlling diffraction.

If you can live without the grill cloth then a gloss paint job would look great. As long as you have the drivers removed you can glue in slabs of Richlite, this stuff really works wonders tightening up bass and focus. Richlite costs $25/sq ft. and you would need 5-10 square feet depending on brace layout, I got free cutoffs from our neighborhood retailer. Playing with the stuffing is easy without the grill cloth in the way, it took me about 4 trials until I got the right amount of Kapok installed in each speaker.
