I didn't replace the caps but merely added an extra few uFs on each of the four sections.  These are stacking a little high, of course, so I plan to plunk them all in their own box.  The additional uFs are providing more bass, which tells me I'll probably hit desired EQ on my headphones @ about 2X original cap values.

Thanks for the feedback.  Make sure you direct some kind of fan across the board or it will get too hot.

I have to reiterate, what a surprising and welcome change this upgrade brought.  This is the type of change one hopes for in an upgrade, a change that gets to root subtleties.  It reminds me of Linn's motto that changes in the source are the most fundamental.

Have you tried any of the Hynes 3-pin shunt regulators?

I haven't, but they look to have the same specs as his larger SR1 shunt supplies.  Perhaps Paul can speak to their sonics.

Hi serengetiplains,

The Z17 type mini shunt regs use the same regulator circuit topology as the SR1M, same ultra-high speed, fast settling, low noise, ultra-wide bandwidth error amp. The current source used in the SR1M is a different topology due to the high power requirements. Overall performance is very similar both technically and sonically aside from the obvious difference in power capability.

Paul

Question for Steve;

I already have and love Paul's SR3-12 and I was blown away by Serengeti's mod  :drool:  but I'm not quite that brave.

If I sent my PaceCar 2 in for the UltraClock upgrade, would you be willing to investigate swapping that 7808 regulator for one of Paul's 3-pin shunt regulators?

If the correct answer is to wait for your next-gen PaceCar, then I can appreciate that, too.

Thanks!
Jake

This is exactly what I was thinking.  I'm also planning to try some in the Overdrive as well.

As a matter of fact, I already have a number of sample regulators on order from Paul, but I have not heard from him for a while.....
