Placing Loudspeakers horizonally

Over the years, as a mastering engineer, I have been carring out experimentation with placing symetrical loudspeakers (mirror imaged) on their sides with the tweeters on the inside of the image. I have a lot to say about it but frankly, have you ever considered it and listened to your loudspeakers on their sides for a considerable amount of time?

I will add more to this discussion of my thoughts in about 24 hours or so. One thing I will leave you with is "all drivers are at ear level" in this configuration.

If you have not tried it with your current set-up..by all means go ahead and give it a shot. Make certain that you listen for at least 2 hours in this configuration to get used to it and then report back your findings from an overall SOUND QUALITY perspective.

Looking forward to seeing what others observe.

Nobody want to try it?

Just one hint....In the mixdown stage of the production process (recording studio) many nearfield monitors are used on their sides, on the console meter bridge.

Some conversation on this may lead to something rather intriquing.

I run my speakers on their sides all the time! :)

Mmmm...Genelecs, I would love to hear those behemoths someday.  Although the mains allow you to rotate the mid\tweeter array based on placement so it isn't the same as rotating a regular speaker sideways.

Hi Nathan!

I really thought this thread would generate more activity than it has. If someone (anyone) would place their loudspeakers (don't matter at this venture what type) on stands at ear level and put the tweeters on the inside of the image, and seriously listen and report back what they think is "better" or "not as good" this was the reason of the post.

Come on now folks, you may not know what you are missing!

Toe them in to aim at your shoulders or a shade wider, like elbows with your arms extended.

Their are a myriad of positive things this configuration can yield. I have had many folks decide that this was best for their current set-up...but your MMV.

This thread is a perfect example of what could be discussed in the new Audio Central Circle instead of being buried in obscurity. Hey Borgiepoo, can we make this happen, with Paster Bob's approval of course? :D Tis ashame,,,, as is the fact that there's no way in hell that my floorstanding Lorelei's are being placed horizontally at 37". Regards, Robin
