Torus and Bryston Amp Design
« on: 30 Dec 2009, 08:29 pm »

Hi James,

With the introduction of a Torus in a system, everything seems to improve re: amp performance.  My question may be one of several.

1) What were you guys hearing prior to Torus during your R + D efforts ? Or rather did Bryston R + D team have “unlimited” access to power for your amps for testing and listening purposes? (As you spoke of earlier with peak amp draws that a Torus can provide.  Is Bryston able to provide power like that without the use of Torus in a lab setting?  Some of the posters here have attempted using very large gauge wiring on separate beakers with  limited success)

2) Finally, has the introduction of a Torus in the equation changed they way you guys are moving forward in your amp research developments eg hearing things now with Torus that you didn’t before.

With the many testimonies on changes for the better in sound when using a Torus, I can’t help but wonder what we were all hearing say 5 or 8 years ago with Bryston amps.

3)I realize a number of objective tests are place to assess an amps performance.  Has that been the ultimate decider in terms of what direction amp design goes into next/

Any info/insight you can provide would be most appreciated.

Thanks again

Joe

Hi Gojo and Happy New Year,

I think the properly sized Torus will provide the same improvement to any amp i.e. that it is not a matter of the Bryston amps requiring the Torus to sound good.  Most of the excellent reviews coming in for the various Bryston amps up and down the line were done without a Torus in the mix.  It just seems logical to me if any amp is isolated from the wall and has an output impedence from the Torus outlet that is a franction of that of the wall socket that there is far less likelihood of current starvation and the ill affects it has on sound quality.  I haven't had the opportunity test this theory so that's just what it is,  I could be wrong from a technical/scientific standpoint.

Hi Joe,

If I am understanding your question then it comes down to: “not knowing what you do not know”.

Our research on the Torus products was motivated by the Question: what would an amplifier love to ‘see’ when plugged into an ideal power source – Answer: a very low impedance high current source. That's true of all other amplifiers as well. So the Torus product was developed by researching the best possible solution to that question. The extra benefit of noise filtering and surge protection were added benefits we built in as we went.

If you asking has the addition and research on the Torus products led us to relook at the power supply sections in our amplifiers the answer is yes.
