SBS 7.4 Question: lost contents of my Playlists
« on: 19 Dec 2009, 12:29 pm »
I went through and put artwork into all my albums using MP3Tag a few weeks ago.

Last night I connected that drive to a new computer, downloaded SC 7.4 onto it, and then scanned the drive.  After scanning there were no contents in my Playlists when SBS 7.4 was up and running tunes.

I have 2 other backups of the files prior to the artwork activity which have not been touched yet.  I did try to drag in and scan one playlist file from the backup to the new computer with rescanning and it did not work.

Did I set up the new SBS7.4 incorrectly?  Perhaps the software is looking for playlist tags that don't exist any more because I retagged with artwork?

Is it possible to edit the M3U file in Notepad and change the directory of the music to the new Hard Drive directory label?  It appears as if the one playlist I opened is referring to a drive that has changed letters.

What do you think?  This would save me major headaches!

Well I tried changing the drive letter and rescanning and that did not work.

Did you happen to notice if you got an error message "music scan terminated unexpectedly"?

This is why I have been avoiding computer based systems.Everytime I hear things like this,I have to wonder, what next.Just my thoughts,I'm in no way putting down anyones choice of system. To each his own.

pop.....pop.....pop.....pop.....pop.... <-----That means the song is over. Time to flip the record to hear six more songs.

Plus, I've not found the "genre" button on my turntable that allows me access to random playback of a couple thousand songs from a particular genre.

You won't ever hear of a device, nor will you ever wonder if there should be a device, that will anti-static your hard drive. Nor will you ever dunk your hard drive into a bath of warm soapy water or alcohol to ensure the release wax, dust, and oils from your skin have been removed.

Just sayin'...

Long Live PC Audio, but I'll pass on the Squeezebox route. Much better ways to get there "IMHO" and if your hard drive library is backed up, it will never deteriorate or get lost, scratched, broken, etc. Your doubts decal are totally unfounded if things are done right and the library is backed up. No muss, no fuss, no bother.  :thumb:

As an example of added convenience, my J.River Media Center which holds over 11,000 albums now has a "radio" feature that will auto play tracks at random or within any set of multiple parameters you care to set. Like I said, no muss, no fuss, no bother.  :thumb:

Yur choice,,,,

Cheers,
Robin

This is probably what you have to do.  If the drive letters or relative paths to the files referenced in the playlists don't correspond with the new locations, then the playlists will be invalid.

Remember that when you edit these playlist files you have to make the paths valid from the perspective of the Squeezebox Server machine.

Are all of the file paths in your playlists absolute paths?  That is, do they all begin with a drive letter such as 'E:'?

If so, another thing you might do, which may be easier than editing a lot of playlist files, would be to give the drive on the new server the same drive letter that it had on the old server.  In Windows this can be done through Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management.   You'll then need to a full 'clear and rescan' in Squeezebox Server afterward.
