Hey Steve, why do you suppose I have constant problems with my Off-Ramp 3 recognizing when I hook up a USB cable?  I have 2 laptops, both are like that ... about 1 out of 3 times I hook things up with either laptop, the Off-Ramp "Data Error" light stays on.  I'll unhook things 10 times, reboot the laptop 5 times, but still can't get a connection.  Then I walk away frustrated, come back 30 minutes later and it works first time I hook it up? 

I know that sounds pretty vague, but honestly the problem has seemed to have no reason to me (as a former Unix Admin).  I'll make no changes other than having a beer and cooling off, then it'll magically start working again. 

What can I check to try and track the problem down?

Are you using anything other than the wallwart PS? With my Off-Ramp 3,   I use a Paul Hynes PS and I have to use the wallwart PS everytime the power goes off on the Hynes's PS so my computer will recognise Empirical, then switch back over to the Hyne's. I don't turn the power off on the Hynes PS,,, ever.

Just went through one of these episodes.  30 minutes of hair pulling, then get up and do a lap around the house, try again and it works first time.

What OS are you using?  Vista?

What Player?

What kind of USB cable? Length?

WinXP Pro SP3, Foobar 0.9.6.4, using the long Belkin Gold USB cable that came with the unit.

You might try another USB port and cable to see if this is consistent.  Another computer should be tried also.  USB ports are not all the same, particularly groups of them.  This problem is either:

1) poor signal integrity on the USB cable
2) some software snafu
