Phase Linear 400 Series II and 4000 Restoration?
« on: 10 Dec 2009, 06:37 am »
Hi All,
I am interested in finding out some more info on my recently rediscovered gems (I think). I came across my first quality stereo system in my parents storage building. Phase Linear 400 series II amp and the 4000 Auto correlation preamp. I know about 5 years ago these were in working order, except for a noisy channel. I am not sure what the cause of the noise is nor if they are worth having fully restored. I love the vintage look and would like to have them restored though.

I did a quick google search and found a couple people who do restore them. Could someone point me in the direction of a reputable person/company that restores Phase Linear equipment. I have no idea what it would cost to restore/recondition/upgrade the units nor if it is worth while. Any thoughts/ideas/opinions???

Thanks

Hello and welcome to AC

Circle Stereo

I had my phase linear equipment gone over by him and was very pleased with the results.

Talked to Bill at Circle Stereo. He seems very knowledgeable about the Phase Linear line and wonderful to talk to.

May I ask what Phase Linear equipment you have?

Wow - I have not thought about those in years.  I owned both of them and many other Phase Linear products probably in the early 1980s.  They were my first separates.

Those there  i have them packed away right now  i think its a 400b amp  and a5100 tuner 2000b pre

The 4000 Auto correlation preamp was always trouble with noise. is it worth the money to restore  :dunno: I did. Even restored will it hold a candle to the newer stuff no but if you like the vintage sound  go for it.

thanks for the pics. Nice setup. The amp is actually the 400 series two. It's the same one I am looking into restoring. I have not yet decided on the preamp. I would like it restored mainly for the uniqueness and the looks. Not sure how it will perform incomparision to today's midfi preamps.

I was about to buy an odyssey stratos amp but and I am wondering if my money would be better spent going that direction rather than restoring the phase linear stuff.

Performance and quality is one part o the equation for restoring them. The others such as sentimental, unique,  and aesthetic are harder to quantify when making this descision.

Can anyone comment on the sound of these vs a modern equivalent?

I own a pair of Odyssey mono extrems and a rotel 991b both beat out the phase linear. The phase linear sounds good in a vintage system but compaired to midfy rotel and arcam stuff from the late 1990 and 2000 dont hold a candle to them. the odyssey is just flat out better.

Ed,
I appreciate the info. That sorta seals the deal. I'll probably have the Phase Linear gone through and brought up to a usable state However it does not appear to be worth investing a lot of money into. I have had my heart set on some Odyssey Stratos Mono extremes for quite some time. I think my money would be better spent towards those than restoring the Phase Linear to top notch condition.

Also, could you explain what you actually hear when you say "The Odyssey is just flat out better". I would like a perspective to work with.

THanks,

way more dynamics, tighter bass, better control of the music more micro detail. like going from a chevet to a caddy.
