Center Channel with Lorelei's
« on: 3 Dec 2009, 10:33 pm »
I know there had been some discussion about this a few years ago.  Looks like someone was using the Usher X-616 as good match.  Anyone else find anything that mates well with the Loreleis?

Thanks

Steve

I'm using 2 Usher X-616's, both front & back center channel's. I tried both the Odyssey Nemisis & Epiphony as centers but the different type drivers, Seas/Tang just didn't match well with the Scan-Speak 8545. Usher's drivers are known to be a close match to Scan-Speak but for a much better price. Even tho both drivers in the Lorelei/X-616 are 7', the Scan-Speak is a carbon fiber driver while the Usher driver is made out of Kevlar. They really don't match up that well sonically but it was the best fit I could find w/o having to go the custom route. For home theater use, the X-616 works OK but it's not a good match for music and I shut my front center off if I'm listening to multichannel music.

If you're looking for a center channel speaker for music purposes, I'd recommend having a custom center made up with the same drivers as the Lorelei, the Scan Speak 8545 carbon fiber driver and the 9700 tweeter. Maybe someone like Rick Craig of Selah Audio would be willing to design one for you? That's best case scenario unless someone knows of a Scan-Speak center that I don't know about. Happy hunting Steve.  :thumb:

Thanks Robin.  I have the Nemisis CC now but wondering if there was anything else that mates up better.  Sounds like the Usher is better, but still not there.  Building something with those drivers would be cool, but it would cost waaaaaaaaaaay more than I would want to spend on a CC.

I can't imagine what 4 Loreleis must sound like?!?!?!?!?!?  Incredible I'm sure!!!!!

The thing is the Lorelei is a german designed loudspeaker while the old Nemisis/Epiphony were canadian designed, totally different speakers. I still have my 2 old Nemisis centers in the closet, I was able to sell the pair of Epiphony's. The X-616 isn't exactly cheap either( they do turn up @ Agon from time to time). Never hurts to talk to Craig, cover all your options. ScanSpeak actually makes a kevlar 8545 that I'm sure would have matched up better with the X-616 but it's the carbon fiber driver that has such a sweet midrange, the kevlar 8545 works better as a midbass driver. The X-616 is an excellent home theater speaker, dynamic and clear as a bell.  :D

Yeah 4 Lorelei's with DPL2-x is sweet for sure, I always leave the rear center X-616 on tho. Actually since I got my Empirical Off-Ramp 3 upgraded with an Ultraclock, I've actually been listening to stereo. The music is so clear with a 3D sound stage, I'm finding I can do w/o the added depth of the rear channels which now seem to diminish the clarity of stereo. 1st time since I was 17 that I only listen to 2 Lorelei's. I still do listen to a lot of Dolby Digital music TV channels off my DirecTv tho where the 5.1 is still preferred. DirecTv is #1 in concert viewing, especially on the weekends.
