New AVA Gear
« on: 25 Mar 2010, 01:00 am »
Just received my new AVA preamp/DAC combo and 240 amp.  New Salk SongTowers are supposed to roll in tomorrow.  So, tonight I hooked up the AVA gear to my old faithful Polk LSi9 book shelf speakers.  I am just amazed.  Frank is my hero!  Have made it through a Dire Straights SACD and a Diana Krall SACD and I am one very happy camper.  Now if FedEx would just get those Salks here....

Thank you Frank.  You make a very, very nice product.

I had a similar experience

While waiting on my Salk speakers, my AVA gear was delivered.  An Ultra pre and an Ultra 550 amp replaced an onkyo 40.1 pre and an anthem mca-50 amp. I couldn't believe the difference.  The sound was improved so much that I began to question if i should have ordered salk speakers to replace the dynaudio I was using.

The sound was in a completely different league when my salk speakers did finally show up though

Out of curiousity, what do you believe made the greater impact in sound quality improvement, the amp-pre or the speaks?

It's difficult to say, but if I had to pick one, it would be the speakers.

The amp and pre seemed to really improve depth, soundstage, and musicality of the system. Before it sounded somewhat "electronic" if that makes any sense, and after, the instruments and voices sounded more real.

The speakers further improved what I listed above as well as dynamics, clarity, and low frequency response.

Before these 2 upgrades I could easily tell i was listening to speakers rather than a live performance.  After the upgrades, I remember one night when I almost told a lady to stop singing when I was finished listening to the music.

Bigload,

I'd love to hear your impressions of the DAC/pre. Either here or on the VisionDAC thread. Been giving serious thought to the Vision DAC, and always look forward to hearing new impressions of it.
