I am getting ready to order a Insight EC and Insight 440H combo.  I have a question about headphone usage.  With the pre-amp and power amp on, if I plug in the headphones will the sound to the speakers be cut off, or do I have to turn off the power amp and just run the pre amp with whatever source I am using?  Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

with the T-8 (SL) preamp, one need to turn off the power amp in order to use the headphones. I do not think that EC is different in terms of the headphones' use.

No, you will need turn off the amp.  The EC, T8 and Ultra headphone circuit is always active.

Thanks for the help.  So for private listening (under the phones) switch off the power amp.  Got it.  Thanks again.

I have the Insight EC preamp, you have to turn off the power amp for private listening. I also have that 440 with it as well, great combo!

One of the features I really like is the L - R mode.  Nice being able to listen to just the left channel through both speakers or the right channel through both.  Really great, especially on some of the twin track records the Beatles and others used in the 1960's (vocals on one channel and instrumentation on the other).  You can hear just the vocals or make your own karaoke using the actual original music.

This feature use to appear on all kinds of audio gear, but sadly it went away.  I found the feature on one of Mark Levinson's pieces of gear, but don't really feel like spending $10,000.00 on a pre amp.

I wasn't really sure what the utility those switches really had. I knew what they did since Frank explained it to me, but I couldn't see the real world utility of such a toggle. I thought it was interesting to play with, but kind of puzzling as a feature. Of course, I grew up in the age of CD and everything stereo, so maybe it was a bigger deal back in the day. I like being able to play stereo as mono though.
