Advice on reconditioning of Sansui AU-717
« on: 7 Nov 2009, 01:07 am »
This amp has been a faithful companion for the past 30 years of my life. I recently took the cover off and noticed leakage from some of the capacitors.
I have to wonder if it has gradually deteriorated (it still sounds good, but it is hard to know if it it as good as it could be), or if I may be risking a catastrophic failure.
So I would like to get it reconditioned.
Please advise re: a good source for this job, as well as what should be done to recondition it. I will get photos if that is helpful.
I can ship, but would be willing to drive a good distance to avoid the risk of damage. I live in Woodstock; north of Atlanta (not too far from Chattanooga) if anyone knows of a good shop for this job in my area. I am not looking for museum quality restoration, but cost-effective reconditioning.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Ken Bernacky at Stereo Surgeons in East Hartford, Connecticut specializes in vintage Sansui work. He is also highly recommended for tuner restoration. Call and tell him what you want. He's reasonable but dismantling, cleaning, repairing and testing could still run into several hundred dollars, I imagine. I had him go through my Kenwood KT 917 tuner and he did a splendid job.

you can also search for echowars on audiokarma.org.  he's well-respected for his work in wintage gear.  not sure where he's located.

I also used Ken for my TU717. I would not use him again. 5 month turnaround, used wrong parts, missed some good upgrade opportunities.

Thanks for the info. I think I have someone lined up that is within driving distance.
