DVD player died....what next?
« on: 3 Sep 2009, 05:31 am »
My old Toshiba player died tonight. HOORAY!

I haven't been keeping up on the latest DVD news, so maybe you guys can give me some recommendations.

Here's my needs/wants:

- Don't need Blue-Ray, this was my Standard DVD player.
- This was my main audio CD player, so good audio playback is essential
- DVD-A or SACD not really important, wouldn't mind it. HDCD would be a plus as I do have a dozen of those.

I know Oppo has a well regarded standard DVD universal player. Is there any other DVD players out there regarded as competition to the Oppo?

You can't go wrong with an Oppo. As far as competition to the Oppo for the price...I'm not aware of any.
However, don't discount a Bluray player. It might just open your eyes to a whole new world of audio playback.

Just something to think about. Now's your chance.  aa

I second the OppO.  At $170 for the DV-980H, it's a no brainer.

Well I opted for the Oppo BDP-83, it does amazing things with my SD DVD collection, and Blu-ray really is better.
Then there's the DVD-A, and SACD capability too...

I highly recommend an OPPO!  Fine product, good service.  When I needed to unlock my 981 to play European format, they responded with advice to help me do it.

I don't believe they make this model anymore, do they?  All I see are two Blu-ray players, one for a shocking $900.

The BDP-83 SE is a modded unit with upgraded components. The standard ($499) unit is still supposed to be exceptional.

But it does look like they've discontinued the DVD players.

Screw swapping discs.... big hard drive + HTPC!

Same convenience improvement as it was going from VHS to dvd.
