Tonearm rewiring
« on: 30 Nov 2008, 07:38 pm »
Hello,

I am going to rewire my tonearm.Any good advice on a  "best buy"  copper cable to use with a good sonic return but not Litz type?
I always test different  cartridges and with Litz often occure that clips come off from tonearm cable.

Hi

Just came across this post, I would recommend getting hold of some UPOCC copper wire from Michael Percy.  IMO this wire is without doubt the best in the world at this stage.  As you may be aware it is cast not drawn and has a purity exceeding 6 nines with crystal 125 metres long.

It is also my opinion that tonearm wiring needs all the help it can get so a one piece wiring regime is a must to get the best signal eliminating as many joins as possible helps the tiny signal as well.  Putting the wire into thin cotton tubing within the tonearm dampens vibration which helps as well.  Good luck with your wiring efforts.

33awg or smaller would be nice too.

With 33awg wire you cannot solder, you must crimp, so keep that in mind. This is just too thin to solder without burning up the wire in the process. I think there are some conductive adhesives that you can use, but no idea if there is any sonic degredation going that way (but I bet there would be over crimping).

Like your new avatar Bob! I think the soldering issues are more from the material the wire is made from, like silver. Then you need a different solder, like silver solder. I see some folks on ickbay selling 26awg, and I'm just afraid that it's adding to the springiness of the tonearm, at least I have a tracking concern with the heavier gauge.

My monkey has been enjoying the new Mini Max headphone amp that I built recently. I think I'll get him some new headphones for Christmas though - those earbuds can't sound too good.

On thin wire - I've got a loop of some super thin (hair fine) wire that someone gave me back when I was experimenting with DIY interconnects. I never got around to trying something with it because I really couldn't figure out how to make the connections work. Just touching the soldering iron to it melted the wire.

You need a variable heat temp soldering iron. My uncle had a monkey once. It liked to throw feces, if I recall.

A variable temp solder pot is key with litz. With Cardas 33ga I used a wide wedge tip where I pooled solder on the flat and roll the 33ga in it. There is an initial smoke plume as the enamel burns off then the strands tin. You dont crimp litz until you remove the enamel.
