D2A differences between b-26da, bcd-1 and bda-1
« on: 12 Nov 2009, 10:00 pm »
Hi James/ members,

What exactly are the technical differences between the DAC in the BDA-1, BCD-1 and the D2A module in the BP-26DA ?
Is the BDA-1 in any (technical) way superior to the others?

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

They are all Crystal DAC's.
The internal DAC's in the  Preamps and Integrateds are limited to 96/24 resolution.
The CD Player and the BDA-1 use the newer Crystal DAC (4398) that is capable of 192/24 resolution.
The CD Player uses one 4398 Stereo DAC the BDA-1 uses two 4398 DACs - one per channel.

Hi James, just curious, have you done any experimenting with 2 dacs in the CD Player instead of one?  Maybe a BCD-2?

Thank you James.
Is there a difference in the analog stages?

Is the upsampling in the BDA-1 considered a difference as well?

Hi Dave,

Yes - good point.- - switchable upsampling.

Hello folks

As a new owner of a BCD1, my  first impression was it's comparability to the BDA1... which ive owned for about 9 months. I havent listened to the BDA since i got the BCD. So i am commenting purely on memory, but i can say that the BCD sounds like what i like about the BDA in it's 16 bit and 24 bit(upsampled) combined. The BDA in 16 bit has really nice attack and with a much more analogue sound. While the 24 bit setting is more robust sounding i guess due to higher voltage drive of 8 more bits. The BCD offers both 16 and 24 bit advantages in one player. But not quite  as good as the BDA does individually. But very very close.
