Ugh! Doh! Etc...
« on: 11 Nov 2009, 05:42 pm »
I no longer have vinyl :banghead: or a table :banghead: nor plans on going that route again :banghead: so this is likely my only opportunity to post in this forum. I stopped by a neighbor's house to discuss trading some CDs, one thing led to another, and we sat for a listen to his system. Big-ass Duntech Sovereigns with older unimpressive gear and run-of-the-mill cables and stock power cords all plugged directly into the wall. He spun a few CDs - nice sound, great speakers. He then played a direct-to-disk recording of David Grusin. Shocking the sound - smooth, detailed (enough), palpable, quiet (except for some pops/clicks), natural, relaxed, involving, yummy. The most non-fatiguing sound I've heard since, um ... since ... well, you all know :banghead:

Come on dude,

Your system is too nice just to "waste" on the digital  side only.  Boy, I bet it would really sound juicy with good vinyl spinning round and round.... aa

Join the dark side Luke....

For purely selfish reasons, do you recall which Dave Grusin LP it was?  I just spotted a Sheffield Dave Grusin "Discovered Again" LP in the used bins for $10 and was tempted to buy it.  But, the all to common experience of extremely well recorded mediocre music truism stopped me.

If you, or any other "Discovered Again" fans, can highly recommend it, I'm going to go back to pick it up.

Thx,
Kenreau

Kenreau,
Yeah, "Discovered Again". Unless you really dig 70's "wacca wacca" guitar riffs the music is only so-so. VERY 70's. Grusin even looks like the Marlboro man with a huge, cheesey 'stache. Now, where ARE those white shoes of mine ... Oh yeah, here they are. Right under my lime green leisure suit. Honey, have you seen my white belt anywhere? I can't find it again ...

I don't think it's that bad, I enjoy it for 'Cripple Creek break-down' and 'Keep your eye on the Sparrow' alone, besides it's a Sheffield lab direct-to-disk......worth 10 bucks  IMO ! But being a young man in my twenties back then I guess you would expect that response !

Never had the white shoes, but any Sheffield is worth $10.  I have most of their stuff and am rebuilding my phono system.

Sheffield has the reputation of wonderful recordings but the performances were said to be restrained because they didn't want to overload the cutter.  At least that's what I remember.

YMMV

FYI - I've never been a Grusin fan - more Grissom than Grusin. I liked the two cuts mentioned by twitch, the rest I did not care for at all. But if I had a table and could buy the d-t-d vinyl for $10 *I* would. For those two cuts and how great it sounds.

Ahhhh....the vinyl vs Cd debate.

Each has it's merits...and drawbacks.

Sound wise vinyl is more "open" and dimensional....but not as  "convenient" as a Cd is....

A nice read....here....

***(Old article....74 min.'s Cd reference)

It's nice to enjoy both... 8)

Uh-oh. Hope not. Not my intent.
Just wanted to share significant impression of never before heard medium of direct-to-disk.
So please, no :argue: allowed.

The Dave Grusin "Discovered Again" album is excellent, as is the same material issued on a CD.  I have one of the cuts on a "Best of" CD.
