Long Term Satisfaction - The Super V2 (bastardized)
« on: 23 Feb 2012, 03:50 am »
Ah man, I just finished a massive, massive project of ripping a huge library of SACD's to FLAC files via my Playstation 3 (Thanks TedB!!!) and I'm kicking back and listening closely for the first time to my new library.  And I gotta say my Super V2's (bastardized) just kick @ss!

Now, for those that haven't followed my V2 journey and wonder "What is a Super V2 (bastardized)?"  I'll tell you.  It's a V2 with the open back V1 tweeter installed.  There's no passive crossover developed for this, so I am using a miniDSP 2x8 to drive it fully active as a 3 way speaker, with highly modded VTA ST70 driving the mids and a 2nd one driving the highs, and a 900 watt Crestor amp driving the bass.  Insane.

Anyway, I've had these speakers for a while now, and I'm still super please with the sound.  Is it "the best system ever"?  No.  But, with hi-rez feeding the miniDSP directly, I can honestly say it's in the top 10 of any system I've heard, ever.

Wish I could say the same about my system  :icon_frown:

Seems like a good place to share my thoughts on browsing this forum for the first time in a long time recently.

The project idea that appeals to me is to build a pair (and then perhaps 3-5 more to complete a HT setup) of V1's, but cross them with an active crossover as well.  Instead of a digital xover though, I'd like to design and build my own active crossover.  Unfortunately, the easiest way to do that would be to have someone do an active crossover on a V1 and then duplicate the slopes and cross points.  Maybe I'd have to buy my own digital crossover since I've haven't seen anyone do an active V1, and I'd likely have to spend the time and money testing it out first.  Sounds like it could be the ultimate bang for the buck 7-speaker system.

Unfortunately, I don't know when I would have the time to start this endeavor...

I'm not sure you'd get a great deal of advantage. The V1 is already semi-active (in the bass) and that's where the gains of going active are usually most evident.
