Old and New Super Tower 3s
« on: 4 Nov 2009, 03:32 am »

I have had, and greatly, no, make that, HUGELY enjoyed, the Super Tower 3 speakers ? the pre-ribbon formulation ? for 17 or 18 years now, and 2 or the larger subs for 19 years.  One and all who have visited my house have also marveled at their sound.  Even visiting women admire their looks and sounds.  Can you beat that!  Veritone, indeed.  Only one visitor to my house took a dislike, and he never heard them!  Another speaker designer was visiting a nearby house of a mutual friend and expressed a grudge of some sort.  Takes all kinds.  But that?s neither here nor there.  I have a question about my old ST3s and the new ST3SREs.

Capacitors age.  Though the sound is still mighty, mighty good, should I worry about or replace the caps in the crossover?  Last year I replaced the 15? and 12? woofers, and the same on both subs with the MegaWoofers.  Lots of ?screwing around? there!  But very nice.  I already had got the carbon fiber 10? upgrades years ago.  Question: if the caps might be replaced, do you sell replacements, or can you recommend anything?

About the new ribbon-based, much upgraded model.  I have heard them at Lucius Morris? salon in DC and agree they are monstrously good.  Overwhelming, even to me.  I wonder about them as I think of a nice retirement gift to myself.  And I haven?t heard the 60s yet.  Just wondering, dreaming, really, at this point.  But about those modified ribbon elements ? 9 to a side?  They just seem kind of fragile to me for some reason.  Durability?  And, since the Big B bought out the supply ? 9000, I think ? will there be enough to go around?  What do you do when you run out?  Can I put dibs on some?

The V60 of 2005 is a much more advanced design than the STIIISRE of 1997 and is the better performer (the V60, that is.)

It is not only open baffle above 220Hz, it has sophisticated waveguides front and back, including a reverse horn for the rear wave.  The foam damper is adjustable.  It looks much nicer IMHO.

A pair of V60 with a pair of VLA towers and the SDE controller in your choice of finishes is about the same price as the STIIISRE.
A single pair of V60 augmented by four VSS Subs, both  in a dipole configuration, reproduced live music with virtually perfect fidelity at this past CES.

I see.  Thanks for waking me up to things - the century marker has toggled, and there I was, still in the 1990s.  Despite its appearance at the Live vs Repro room, I wasn't taking the RM V60 seriously - silly me.  I will arrange for a listen.  It doesn't appear to be on the east coast, so it may mean a trip to CES2010.
