Biamp or get a DCX2496?
« on: 22 Dec 2010, 03:44 am »
Hi Danny (or anyone else),
I have an identical pair of custom tube amps that I was using in my previous setup (running a fully active speaker setup).  With building out my V2's, I only use one of them to drive the mid/highs.  First, can I biamp the mids/highs somehow with my 2nd amp, or should I sell it and get a DCX2496 to do a bit of bass EQ on my subs?

You could use your second amp to bi-amp them, but since the mid-bass driver doesn't create much of a back EMF, then I doubt it will be worth it. Differences will be very subtle at best.

And I'd have a good long look at the room response below 200Hz before deciding to EQ it with one of those. If there is a problem then maybe so. If it is fairly smooth then I don't think I'd add it to the signal chain.

What type of distortion/coloration/hum/etc... would the DCX2496 create in the final sound please?

For ranges below 200Hz you can get by with it, but above that I wouldn't want something like that in the signal chain especially if you are using D/A and D/A conversions with it.

I am just not a big fan of putting any entree level or mid-fi level gear in the signal path in an high end application.

You'll just get a whole lot better sound quality from a well designed passive crossover and a good quality DAC.

I would only use the dcx on the subs, and not on the mids/highs at all.  I have dual outputs from my preamp, so the sub signal is comletely separate from the mid/high signal, and I'd still be using the passive crossover for everything except the under-200hz stuff.

The bass with the V2's is FAR better than any other (box) speakers I've used, but it could still use a bit of eq to deal with the left speaker loading the room a bit more than the right speaker.  And the controls on the SA1 amp only do gross volume adjustments, and no eq.
