OK, Stupid Question Time

Well, needless to say I've got too much spare time on my hands but let me bounce this one off you guys.

I'm looking to do a hard disk player for a car. I know there are a few different head units that have hard drives but I'm wanting to do an add on through a pair of pre inputs. I could do the usual fix by doing some sort of iPod device. In my case its an iAudio X5 (60 gig). It works OKish but I'd like to do something that has significantly more hard drive space and better sound quality than the line out of the iAudio.

So I've come up with a screwy idea that might just work if all the stars align. Lets forget about the voltage issues here for a minute. My thought is to use a Logitech Touch as the interface device because it has a USB connection and can read a standalone hard drive (I think). Now this one could be a bugaboo, but my thought is to use a Duet as the remote to communicate with the Touch, this assuming the Duet remote talks to the Touch.

Now I haven't worked out all the details yet as this is all just vaporware at the moment. The Touch looks like it might just be small enough to mount on the dashboard of a car but if not, I might be able to locate the touch out of the view of sight and extend the IR sensor up where the Duet can talk to it.

The second issue is the cold weather and hard drives. They tend not to want to work until they have warmed up a bit. That one shouldn't be too difficult to overcome. Worse comes to worse, I could always take the drive in when I exit the vehicle.

The last one is power. I'm not sure what the voltage or amp draw of the Touch is but this shouldn't be to hard to overcome with a well regulated power supply.

Now I know this all sounds a little crazy and it may never come to fruition but I'm thinking this might just work. If it does, the sound quality could be pretty darned good plus I could drag around 500 gigs of FLAC tunes.

Thoughts?

Scott,

The Touch requires 5 volts. It would not be too big a deal to offer a 12 volt to 5 volt "adapter" to use the Touch in a car. The Touch does accept SD cards. On cold days you could plug in a 32 gig card. That should be enough to get you to work and back.

The Touch is does have a touch sensitive display. If you are able to mount it in your dash, you can just use your finger tip to access the controls. It will also have Wi-fi so in theory, you should be able to control it with your iPhone or Duet controller.

With the Touch having a USB input, could I plug in (like) a 500gig drive loaded with music and then be able to read all the files and subdirectories?

You mentioned it being wifi, that means I wouldn't have to extend the IR sensor where the Duet remote could talk to it...right? I could mount the Touch remotely in the trunk or glove box?

....hmmmm

You got it, Scott.

You should also be able to connect to the Touch through wi-fi, if it is parked near your house, and transfer files to the hard drive in your car, if power is on.

You can run the Touch's analog outs direct to a car amp and control the volume with the DUET controller. If you want to go fancy, you might be able to fine a 12 volt DC powered external DAC and run that into the car's amps.

The interior of a closed up car on a typical midwestern summer day can reach 175 degrees.
I'd also question the durability of a Touch/Harddrive combo. They're weren't design for the physical rigors of potholes, vibration, etc...
I also wonder how much G-force a HDD can take before the "needle" makes physical contact with the "disc".

However, knowing that you're looney enough to have installed a tube amp in a car, I have no doubt you'll fit a Touch/Harddrive in there if it's remotely possible.

Neat idea though. You're cool.  8)

How about a RAID array of SSDs?

I somehow have a vision of the amp being installed under the dash and the tubes sticking up through holes in the top of the dash.
