Fans of martial arts or practitioner of Kyokyshin Kaikan can watch

"Fighter in the wind" - a Korean film on Mas Oyama who was born Korean. The cinematography is artistic

For more current affairs, there is the B&W film from Pierre Schoendoerffer

"La 317eme section" (the 317th platoon)

Much better than Platoon. Substitute the jungles of Indochina for rocky mountain caves, and you get Afghanistan and a lesson in counterinsurgency. David Galula who penned the bible on counterinsurgency, now required reading for future US Army officers, was a French officer in Indochina.

Great recommendations in this thread!  I've been a Netflix member since 2002, & it is a great source for foreign films.  I'll try not to repeat too many of those listed before, but here are some 4- 5 star rated choices my wife & I enjoyed:

Anything by Kurosawa: Seven Samurai, Ran, Roshomon, High & Low, Hidden Fortress

Fritz Lang: Metropolis, Spies, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Fellini: 8 1/2, Nights of Cabiria, La Dolce Vita

Jeunet: Amelie, City of the Lost Children, Delicatessen

Truffaut: 400 blows,  Jules & Jim

Misc:  The Lives of Others,  Paris Je Taime, Bob Le Flambeur, Jean de Florette, Pan's Labyrinth
