help with tweeter issues?
« on: 17 Apr 2010, 06:11 pm »
Hi Folks,

I built a pair of AV2s a couple of years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed them, but four days ago one of the tweeters stopped working in one of the cabinets.  I switched wires to the amp to make sure the problem was in the speaker.

next step was to dissemble the drivers and look at the crossover and I've shrunk wrapped the connections, so its hard to tell if the problem is there.

Before I start unwinding shrink wrap, is there a simple way to test if the tweeter is blown?  I'm an electronics newbie, and actually could build the GR speakers because of Danny's noob friendly ways.

anyway, I have a multi meter if anyone has guidance on how to test the tweeter  I could of course switch out tweeters with the working speaker, but thought I'd check here for other advice.

if the tweeter is blown, no biggie - I can order a replacement from Danny

thanks everyone

Steve

Set you multi meter to measure resistance (in ohms) and set the probes on the tweeter terminals. Even with heat shrink on them, there will be enough room right above it to get the probes on it.

Resistance of 5 to 6 ohms should pop up. If you get no reading then it is an open circuit (blown).

yep, looks like the tweeter is dead.  I'll place an order on the site - thanks Danny
