Infinity Speaker model?
« on: 13 Oct 2009, 08:57 pm »
I'm trying to jog some folks memories regarding the big Electrostatic looking Infinity Reference series speaker made in the early 80's. Can anyone send me a link? These speakers started me on my Audiophile Journey.
They used to sell them at a store on the Eastside of Cleveland near Mayfield Hts, OH. Very large with several ribbon style looking tweeters and Oak cabinets.
Cheers

Thanks Wayne!

I think it was the RS-IIB possibly the RS1. What a sound those things put out. :o
I remember a Demo of what I think now is a very average recording on CD but great on Vinyl. Manheim Steamroller Fresh Aire III. The first track with the attack and decay of the drums and the synthesizers was truly impressive.
I still can not duplicate in my mind that particular track from those speakers, and the saleman sure had the volume level up 8)

Thanks for the link. I have some early model bookshelf speakers and one has a blown woofer. I need to find out where to get it repaired.

What is blown in the woofer?

Is the foam surround falling apart?

You can get a kit to re-foam the woofers.

Get in touch with Orange County Speaker Repair I believe they have a fair amount of experience with Infinity drivers.

Many, many years ago, I sold Infinty speakers in a B&M hi-fi store. I just loved them and eventually ended up with a pair of RS 2.5s. I never really had a amp the could do them justice. That experience finally led me to try the VMPS.

Will do. I hope to get them fixed as I have not heard them in a few years now. They are sitting in the boxes...
Thanks for the link. I'm glad someone else heard those monster Infinity's. That was a pretty darn good speaker back then.

I used to sell Infinity speakers in the late 1970s and I remember that those Quantum Line Source speakers had a massive woofer with a dual voice coil. Replacing one of those could be difficult. Of course, if it only needs surround replacement, you could get a very good deal. As I recall, there wasn't enough power on earth to push them to their limits. Very inefficient and a hellish load.
It was our Thelma Houston speaker.

I owned my RS1bs for nearly 17 years before letting them go after finding a similar type new system that kept the same theme, yet improved upon everything.  Those Infinities had been my dream system for many years that I was fortunate enough to make a reality.

macrojack, Back when I was involved with retail audio we called them Coffin Line Sources. They could drain an Ampzilla dry and go looking for more current.
