Tube traps or Panels for corners
« on: 3 Jan 2010, 05:09 pm »
About a year ago I picked up a local deal on 36 panels of 2" Corning 703.  The room to be deadened is a nightmare... 25X 27 with a 15 ft opening to a second room 15X12.  The ceiling is 8ft rising to 14 ft.  Tile floors, lots of windows.  I've stuck 6" thick panels behind a pair of 38" X 8 ft Persian wool rugs and placed them in the corners of the speaker wall.  Would tube traps be better for controlling bass? The speakers slated for this room are the LS9's.  The rest of the 703 I'll eventually space out around the room.

Are the panels flat on the wall or can you angle and straddle the corners (still probably less room than tubes would take)?

The panels are flat and angled across the corners.

That should perform just fine.  A tube won't do much better until you get up to about a 24" diameter.

Another place for treatment that's common is centered on the rear wall to help with bass cancellations off the rear wall.

The tube traps are more efficient to dampen the bass than panels in corners, I prefer tubes in the corners and panels in the walls.

Thanks for the responses.  :thumb: Think I'll leave them for now and concentrate on making wall panels.  Perhaps, I'll come back to them and make 24" diameter tubes later.
