SW-12B and O Audio amp
« on: 16 Oct 2009, 11:39 pm »
Hi all....older newbie here who's ready for his first DIY sub. I'm trying to keep the budget between $250-$300 and have already purchased a used O Audio 500W amp...the one with the variable boost/SSF and notch-type PEQ....so @ $110-$150 left for the driver, mdf, and misc. materials.

My room is rather large (17x20x9) and adjoins more open space but I'm not after high SPL or in-you-chest pressurization.....I care more about clean, quality bass at moderate listening levels., 50/50 HT and music.

The GR SW-12B driver has caught my attention for cost and quality reasons. Anyone using this driver and amp combo in a sealed enclosure? From browsing here and the GR site, looks like 1.2-1.4 ft^3 is recommended but I'm a bit unsure about how the driver will react to the amp's boost capabilities.

Any thoughts and/or alternatives would be appreciated.

Cheers.

So long as you don't get carried away with the volume settings then it will work great. Later you can parallel a second SW-12B onto it and take advantage of all of that power.

Danny, thanks for the response. I think I'll spend some time learning Unibox or WinISD to see how dimensions and performance interact. I really like the looks and size (14.5x20x20) of the Epik Sentinel but I don't know how the SW-12B would work with the Oaudio amp in a slot ported enclosure. I've read that some drivers can't handle the amp's boost below 25hz.
