neil young has released his archives on bluray. claims uncompressed 192 24 bit audio also available through downloads ie not just on the disk. james claimed sampling over 96 could cause problems. im totally confused what is the best dac to go with.jitter. Upsampling can be made to a variety of new sample rates. Bryston has found that while higher sample rates can be used, such as 192 kHz or even 384 kHz, there are penalties in noise, jitter sensitivity and distortion which outweigh any added benefits from these higher rates vs. 96 kHz

Hi hippy,

Sorrry not sure I know what you mean about me saying sampling over 96 could be an issue?

Welcome to the forum.  Getting 192/24 from a Blu-Ray disc is going to involve passing the signal from a Blu-Ray player either digitally via HDMI (which the Bryston DAC does not have) to a processor that can decode the hi-rez audio (like the new Bryston SP3 will when it comes out) or via multi-channel analog outputs from the Blu-Ray player (not all of them have analog outs) in the multi-channel analog inputs of a pre/pro or rec'r.  In that case you're using the DACs in the Blu-Ray player.

Phil,

isn't the 192/24 signal transferred by the coax out of a blu-ray player as well? in this case he could use the BDA-1 for stereo. but: the signal won't be upsampled by the Bryston DAC anymore cause it is already 192/24...

sorry im having trouble figuring out how to post responses. going above 96 sampling could cause problems was information i read on brystons website "Upsampling can be made to a variety of new sample rates. Bryston has found that while higher sample rates can be used, such as 192 kHz or even 384 kHz, there are penalties in noise, jitter sensitivity and distortion which outweigh any added benefits from these higher rates vs. 96 kHz". also my understanding is that using optical or coaxial outputs results in downsampling to 48k

Ok thanks I understand now.

That was written a few years ago when we first introduced a DAC in out BP25 preamp.  The problem then was that the DAC's themselves were better performing at 96/24 than they were at 192/24.  The better DAC's that we use now in the BDA-1 EXternal DAC can easily handle the higher 192/24 sample rates.

Sorry for the confusion.

perhaps my post subject should have been dts hd master audio. it is my belief that my biggest problem is the quality of the source material. if i can listen to 24 192 uncompressed audio files this situation should improve. as far as using brystons dac sorry there way beyond my budget constraints my plan was to use the analogue outs of the bluray player with my bryston 4b amp .5 preamp in my stereo stereo set up.
