Where to get a BNC added to my DAC?
« on: 10 Oct 2009, 03:37 am »
Any suggestions?  I'd like to get a high quality BNC connection modded onto my TriVista DAC.  Thanks for any help you can give me.

Any particular reason for getting this done as opposed to a cable terminated as BNC on one end and RCA at the other? Curious because I now find myself the owner of a transport with a BNC output and an RCA input DAC. I was going to go the BNC to RCA route (or even an RCA to BNC adaptor for my transport side), and want to know what the advantages of the BNC connector may be.

If you want to replace one of the existing RCA inputs, this shouldn't be to difficult. I'd ask around local electronics shops first to possibly save on shipping. Again, if there are good reasons to go to folks more specialized than this, I'd be curious to know why.

Thanks for the BNC reference. But I'm still not entirely clear on the advantages of a BNC-BNC cable over a BNC-RCA cable for a digital coax run to a DAC.

Would this invalidate your warranty?

I've had BNC and IMO it wouldn't be worth messing with the warranty or even taking the piece out of service for days/weeks (unless you can do the work yourself).  The only advantage I found with BNC was that it twist locks into place and I never had an issue with RCA coming loose, especially better ones with their "fierce" grip.

Various mod shops offer BNC options.  If you go bother to ahead, I'd shop for the best connector available.

Remember that BNC connectors come in both 50 Ohm and 75 Ohm varieties. Plugging one type into the other type permanently messes up the female connector. (I don't remember which one has the bigger pin)

RCA isn't 75 ohms impendance, BNC is (or can be, there are two types). Nothing you can do to a RCA will make it 75 ohms.  The problem is that SPDIF is an RF signal and needs a certain impedance, in this case 75ohms.  How problematic is not using a real 75ohm connector?  Well not problematic enough for mass market hi-fi to use a proper connectors.  They set the trend and everyone else conforms.

However this isn't done for good engineering. (using an RCA that is).   It is done for simple economics.  We fret about so many insignificant things in hi-fi, we should fret about real things like proper termination to avoid unwanted reflections in a SPDIF tranmission.

Wow Josh--thanks for the input.  The real reason is that I had a great BNC to BNC digital cable and had heard that the termination was inherently better than RCA.  Thanks for explaining why.  I'll check Boulder and see if I can get a true 75ohm.

Yes Josh, thanks. I'm glad at least one end of my digital cable will be BNC. Not quite ready to convert my DAC's input to BNC, but maybe once the warranty has expired. Will also need to be convinced it's a long term keeper though, since the conversion will likely hurt the resale value...
