Modifying BP26 or Stand Alone BP 1.5?
« on: 3 Jan 2010, 02:49 am »
I am wondering what the Pro’s and Con’s would be to have a BP26 factory modified with a phono stage compared to purchasing a stand alone BP1.5?

Any comments would be most welcome.

Thanks.

Be well...

Hi,

As you have the bp26 you already have the MPS2

For me if space allows I would go for the BP1.5

The MPS2 keeps the power supply external.

The BP1.5 allows future change should the BP26 ever get replaced (Doubt it!)

I am sure the internal phono stage will be well shielded but for me external is what I would do......

Check with others but the phono stage uses high gain and so best kept on its own.

PS - You could lend the BP1.5 to the wifes ipod system

Laundrew,

going for an integrated phono solution means to give up the mono/stereo switch of your 26 preamp. on the other hand you can avoid long cable runs by choosing the integrated. i took the 1.5 as i like the idea of a stand alone unit.
and hey...it looks just great! man i love it!!

Hi Andy,

Where have you been??  We missed you over the last month and a half (did you get my PM from 10/17?).  Anyway, there is no performance advantage with the 1.5 vs. internal stage.  They are identical.  The BP 1.5 does provide for gain setting changes in the field by removing the top and moving jumpers.  This has to be done at the factory with the internal stage.  There is a price difference too if that matters to you.  If you didn't have the BP 26 yet the price for the MM/MC internal option is $1,200.00, the MM only is $500.00 and the BP 1.5 (MM/MC) is $2,500.00.  I'm not sure what the retrofit of the internal stage costs.  I understand you don't have a turntable/cartridge as yet.  If you go with a MM cartridge you would not lose the the stereo/mono switch on the 26.  It would probably be best to detertmine what TT and cartridge you will use before deciding on the phono stage configuration.  As always this is a "how much do you want to spend" scenario.

Sorry for the confusion as I forgot there are 2 Andy's posting.  I was addressing Laundrew.  My bad for not using the quote feature, a grievous breach of protocol on my part.  That being said Mr H, you would be missed as well if you disappeared for a couple months.  Now, back to to the BP 1.5. :thumb:

Hello Bill,

Not sure what catridge I want to use as of yet - still learning  abot TTs :). I sent a reply to your e-mail a couple of days ago - sorry about my very late reply as I had to get an exam out of the way and I normally stay offline when I write or study. My X-05 experienced a mechanical failure in the CD drive unit and I sent you some information about the problem with it, the repair and my views on the customer service - let me know if you received my e-mail.

Be well...
