Since i don't have a portable phone i really cant answer your question but this might just be what you need
SMARTTALK INLINE MICROPHONE FOR EXISTING EARPHONES FOR USE WITH THE IPHONE With that you can use a good set of headphones rather then something designed for a phone

I have the Shure earbuds available on the Apple website.  Sound quality is pretty good, and I haven't had any of the issues mentioned in the reviews on the Apple site:
