Hi,

I want to discus an idea, based on the wave field synthesis principle. On the www.holophony.net website is described a procedure, which fakes the size and reflective behaviour of the recording room by manipulations of the strongly directed wave fronts of a WFS Loudspeaker screen in front of the listener. The procedure ought to subtract the playback room acoustics during the synthesis.

Should such idea be the future of true spatial audio?

Regards H.

That is fascinating, that is for sure.  I have been to the Yamaha studio (in New York near Carnegie Hall) where they demonstrate active acoustics.  It is not cheap, but it is valid technology, stunning manipulation.  Another technology that I found great to listen to is this product http://mixonline.com/products/review/audio_emes_owl_speaker/  The owl would still need good room acoustics,  the Yamaha system needs a large room, lots of speakers and amps take up a lot of room.  The digital steering described in the wavefront synthesis is fascinating, I have seen several examples of the speaker panels, but have not heard the result.  It is a great time to be alive!  Now if only some people would make some great new records to play!

Wow, that's a lot to work thru!  I'll have to take some time to sort out what I can actually understand of it. :)
