Fixin' a Scott 299C amp
« on: 20 Jul 2009, 08:41 pm »
I am writing this at my sister's NYC office, so my responses will be limited over the next two weeks, as I don't have my laptop with me.  It is catch as catch can with the internet connection
My question for you is this. my brother in law is thinking of throwing out his in-wall mounted,
Scott 299C amp with FM receiver.  Could you guys check for me on the two outfits who used to refurb these babies?  It may be out of my price league for shipping them plus their charges.  It is too bad they don't have the outside chassis boxes, as those can command high prices on eprey.
I don't know what is wrong with them, but it can't be very much.
Thanks a lot AC'er's.
Would love to visit some of you guys, as I am ping ponging between my two sisters, visiting old friends I used to teach with, and planning on attending some music.  I sure thought of Lone Wolf, this past weekend, when I was out on Long Island, but I don't know how far East Patchogue is to where he lives.  I bet he could have passed his magic hands on the amp and made it glow again.

I'd like to hear the suggestions you get.  I have a 299C that lights up just fine but no sound comes out.  No hum, static, scratches, clicks or nuttin'.   :(
Ideas welcome.

There used to be place that fixed them up real fine.  I thought they were located out in the Magnolia
area in the Carolinas.  I also thought Bill Baker of Response Audio knew who was doing this work, but I may have that wrong.
Yes, I may take this amp off my relative's hands, and pay the killer shipping to Utah. But it will have to wait, as I have an Eico HF-81? integrated amp that I want to make a project this fall, and hope that my electronics mentor has the time away from work to take me through the unit.  JoshK gives me hope as he pretty much taught himself these past two years. :green:

Hot Glass Audio

NOS Valves - Craig Ostby in Michigan - Hangs out on Klipsch forum, highly recommended but has a waiting list

If you are near St. Louis we have a great shop run by Zawwin.  I can't think of the name but I am sure someone in the Gateway group could help

I know a couple more but will have to research a little and yes, I am sure it would be worth it!

Thanks, guys.
My brother-in-law just returned from Asia, on a grueling 27 hour trip, and will not be communicating with me until later in the week.  But I will give him this information when he is back in the living.

I had a negative experience with Hot Glass Audio. Perhaps he has improved his service since he worked on my Scott LK48 but I would go with another option. I also recommend trying to find a local tech because vintage gear doesn't ship well and if you have unexpected problems you will be subject to multiple shipping charges and risks.

Roy,
+1 on the idea of local work vs. shipping.  It turns out my young nephew, who listened to my system in Salt Lake, has become a convert.  He is getting the Scott gear, and has somebody in his Brooklyn martial arts class that is going to do the repairs.  I am very happy that this gear will continue to shine in the family. 8)

When I checked w/Mapleshade they confirmed that one of the "improvements" they make is to bypass tone controls and filters. Personally I like having that flexibility, especially since the amp was designed that way. Maybe they can do other maintenance that isn't so invasive, I don't know.

another great place to restore your tube gear is Sam's Audio Labs   www.samsaudiolabs.com

he is the one who did the restorations on the Eico 81 in the Stereophile review

Craig (NOSValves) is one of the best Scott techs. He has down three of my Scott 299s, a McIntosh MC240, a Marantz 8B, and an Eico. A great tech, superior warranty, and a good person. I send stufff up to him over driving it ten miles to the local shop.
