Keeping Bugs out of the Mancave

This has been a good year, no bugs in the mancave. Nothin scarier than the sensation of something crawling on your leg or neck while listening to your favorite tunes in the dark.

If you walk around the outside of my house you'll notice ants walking around the perimeter. None, okay maybe one, made it inside to crawl on my arm. The reason, besides having no summer. Is I sprayed indoor-outdoor pestiside all along the base of the concrete and window seals, and along where the basement raftors join the concrete. That was last year! Never had to spray this year though I stocked up on another bottlle.

Occasionally a crescendo of bass will knock a spider from the raftors. The ususal reaction is, 'Look at the size of that thing!' and hit it with a shoe. But wait a minute, if that spider is that big she's obviously eating something even scarier that could crawl on you. I kill it anyway reasoning that she must have youngens, and they'll have more to eat with her outta the way.

I like the terpentine like smell of freshly sprayed bug spray. Over time I suppose it's gets alittle nauseating, but I keep a fan running to air the room out. 8)

I had a fruit fly infestation last year. My renter, since moved out, liked to buy bananas. Well bananas if you leave em to rot, hatch hundreds of these flies. I was kept busy swatting these little pests for days.

Fortunately our -40 Celcius winter will kill any bugs that manage to escape the fly swatter. 8)

We get some incredible arachnids at our house in the summer.  A couple summers ago we had one that spun her web early and stayed in the same spot all season.  She got so big we adopted her and named her Charlotte (how clever!).  She did such a great job, along with the bats that inhabit the silo on the barn behind our house, that I never had to spray for bugs.  Such a blessing these creatures are.

BTW, my 7B's never get hot enough to act as bug zappers so this is a good thing to get them outside before they enter the listening domain.

I spray the outside perimeter of the house a few (3-4) times a year with "Home Defense" spray.  I also have some of the so called electronic repellers (that supposedly send a signal thru the electrical system).  I don't see that many bugs.  This time of year as it has started to cool down I've seen a few crickets.  I've probably not seen a half dozen ants all year and a dozen or so other bugs (mosquitos, spiders) - but limited numbers.  I'll likely spray again in the next week or two.  I do have lots of bugs outside but I guess I leave enough plants, mulch, trees, etc. that there is much for them to enjoy outside.

My wife says it is simple:  "Just don't eat in there!"

Of course that wholly contradicts the purpose of a man cave...........

Yes, do be aware.  They are already all over James Tanner for using dogs to test high frequency performance.

About 3 years ago we started seeing some of these little monsters:

They ar4e camel back cave crickets. But they tend to look like spiders, so they are affectionately known as "Sprickets". They are blind and jump at you when you come close, looking for the shadow - which really sucks and is scary.

Regular bug spray doesn't kill them, only cricket poison, or squishing them (but they are juicy and disguisting). Also, if you have these, then you probably have mice too, since it is a favorite food of theirs. They live in crawlspaces and other dark locations and tend to sneak into basements. Oh yeah, they eat fabric.

I put cricket poision outside where I see them. Usually over by the garbage pails where they jump out at me when I'm taking a bag of trash out of the house (yuck). I found that making a pad out of 2 pieces of duct tape and leaving it sticky side up does a nice job of trapping them in the basement.

Enjoy,
Bob

Oops...did I say my dog? Ummm...I meant to say my neighbours' dog a few doors down, yes it must of being my neighbours' dog and their bugs also. I would never, ever want to hurt a bug, those little cuties  :inlove:  :peek:

They are pretty ugly.  I don't have them where I am in Northern, VA but my brother is 15 miles away closer towards DC and he gets them in his basement.  I never saw them when I lived in (sourthern and central) NJ either.  I was shocked when I saw one for the 1st time and it jumped.
