Groovy Stylus Cleaner, by BagsUnlimited.com

http://www.bagsunlimited.com/cart/detail.asp?cat=2&subcat=16&product_id=ascf114

I have read that some stylus cleaning products contain chemicals that are harmful to the glue on the stylus / cantilever.  Worse yet, some can leach up into the cartridge housing and wreak havoc on the inner workings.

Anyone have experience with this product?  The label says it contains alcohol, but no other info.  It is incredibly cheap compared to other stylus cleaners.  I am looking to replace my depleted "Needle Nectar", so I already have the brush.

Both the Needle Doctor and TurntableBasics.com carry it.  I would like to believe that since they are both reputable specialty vinyl sellers this means it is a safe product and they endorse it.   But who knows?       :dunno:

Thanks,
John

Sorry I don't have any info on the stylus cleaner you are asking about. Personnel I use some 99% rubbing alcohol. I use it VERY VERY sparingly and only about once every 2 weeks. I read on the internet that it was fine but am not totally sure yet .

I make my own record brush fluid that I also use to occasionally clean the stylus. It's made from a 3 to 1 ratio of reverse osmosis water and 99% rubbing alcohol.

I think most diamond stylus are mechanically crimped in place on the stylus as opposed to being glued, so i really don't think there is a worry, but I have never used the alcohol full strength. Except in cocktails.

Hi  Wayne,

I actually took your advice a while back from another thread and made your Record cleaning fluid I just use distilled water though. It works great by the way and I don't see the need to buy anything else. I will now take you advice and  add some distilled water to my stylus cleaner, may straight alcohol is too much.

Reverse osmosis is just a fancy name for filtered water -- you force (preasure from tap) water through a membrane (filter) and you get solvent (clean water) separated from solute (unwanted stuff).

Undertowogt, I'm glad you like the formula. Do you notice your LPs getting slippery?

Hi Wayner

I don't really touch the record after cleaning, not sure if they are slippery. I do however notice less surface noise, let dust / marks on my LPS and over all sonic improvement. After getting/building a Record cleaning machine I will now not be able to live without one. Anyone serious about vinyl should have one.
