Monitor Audio MA3 - opinions?
« on: 30 Aug 2009, 03:24 pm »
I need another speakers like I need another hole in my head... but these are 5 minutes from my house, look funky, and might add nicely to my retro living/dining room.  My wife and I inherited 60's teak dining set, and added a teak wall unit, so we are playing with the theme some.

Anyone heard these = http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/139679-monitor_audio_ma3_speakers/

I would consider using them with my JVC EX-A1 main unit, and floor stand these on either side of the wall unit.

They are certainly the right age.

I know that there will be Cerwins, Klipsch and other options in time, but looking for opinions on older floor standers, that would fit the late 60's to mid 70's theme.

Thanks guys!

I haven't heard them (and probably few have), but I would guess that it is one of the best speakers around in the 9" X 14" oval woofer class!  A quick Google leads to a post on Hi-Fi Forum UK http://www.hififorum.co.uk/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=2846 where another Mark asks:

"I am looking to replace or repair the bass driver from a Monitor Audio MA3.  These speakers were available from around 1975-80 and according to Monitor Audio, they have not been able to source these drivers for over 12 years!

The drive units are oval on shape and so couldn't be replaced with a conventional round unit.  The driver is solid to the touch and doesn't move back as it should and the rubber diaphragm appears rippled."

Apparently manufactured by KEF, I would make sure that the rubber surrounds and the suspensions are in good shape, as I don't think you would have much luck finding a replacement woofer in the future (or another used pair).
