Must speakers be connected?
« on: 18 Aug 2009, 03:31 pm »
Hi,

I'm having a bit of trouble with my new Bryston.  It's the on and off switch in front. Sometimes the amp is difficult to turn off, an intermittent problem. I'm afraid of blowing my speakers if the switch is bad. Must the speakers be connected before turning the power on?

Hi Michael,

The switch can be turned on or off without any connections.  If its the 'membrane' switch like on the older amps  (new amps have a push-pull switch) then it is just the fact that the switch is sensitive and my turn on then off with the same touch.

The only thing that can blow your speakers here is a charge of dc. Recognizable by a bad thump. This event is highly unlikely with reputable builders like Bryston, Krell, etc

Yep. I have all membrane switches and they can be a bit quirky. Howeevr, all my amps are triggered by the SP 1.7, so I never have to use the membrane switches.
