I am pretty new to audio, and thus I  am super geeked to work on the sound of my system etc. I was out of listening to a ton of music, until now, when I have a system that really makes it all worth listening to again. :icon_lol:
Also, this may sound corny, but you guys and the various music threads here, have led me in all sorts of new listening directions. So thanks !!

Over the last couple of weeks I seem to not be enjoying music as much as I remember. This is strange for me as usually it is the one thing I can rely on to take me out of myself. Do you, at times, find it hard to listen?
Over the last couple of weeks I seem to not be enjoying music as much as I remember. >> This same thing happen to me, except that already go over a year I lost desire to listen music, due this awful Financial Crisis started in August2008.
I have a pile over 15 new sealed SACDs  to listen.
This mess broke my both legs if you understand me.

My level of interest on this hobby had declined dramatically over the past year.
I'm going to downsize my system to an Iphone and cheap pair of headphone.

The economy having crashed killed most of my interest in upgrading things like cables and electronics to a great degree, but, if anything, I'm listening to more music now.  Helps escape the stress of everyday life.

I jumped into the "higher end" audio hobby a couple of years ago and became totally absorbed.  Over the past few months I have not lost interest in music but am certainly less prone to purchase new gear, cables or tubes.  I think I have reached a point where I will carefully analyze/evaluate potential system changes rather than get caught-up in whatever is the latest and greatest piece of gear to own.  Lonewolfny told me when I started to enjoy the music and I am now trying to do so!

My interest in audio is a bit more fickle than my love of music.  I have a lot of hobbies and my absorption in one will wane while another waxes.  Since returning to school F/T I can't afford to do much to my audio system but that's okay- I'm pretty content with what I have for the time being.  At the moment my heart & money are focused on knives and sharpening paraphenalia...sadly that isn't really cheap either.

Ah, the music itself...that's a tough one.  It's summer in SD, and like Minne I think there's been about 4 nice days this year.  Classes start in a week and I'll trying to cram a last bit of summer in before I return to full time work & full time school.  At the moment my interest in music has ebbed to the lowest point it's been in ages, but it hasn't gone away.  My listening has just changed form.  I haven't spent much time in front of my main audio system lately but I'll still crank up a song at the computer and I have MPR in the car.

But to answer the question, yes- I do get a little burned out on music sometimes.  Paradoxically, it's usually music that's the cure.

For a long time, I found it easy to go for long periods without listing to music.  This wasn't so much a reflection of my desires, but of the competing demand on my time, and the priorities expressed by my family members.  But I've noticed something recently:  a phenomenon that is extremely pronounced.  If I have two or three days when I can't turn the stereo on and listen to music I love, I get really annoyed.  My temper gets short, and I get exasperated with my kids much more quickly.  My patience is greatly diminished, and I become much less charitable in my interpretation of events.

As a result of all of this, I'm actually becoming much more protective of my time listening to music.  While my wife may not like the noise it makes, or the volume at which it plays, I suspect even she realizes that my improved mental health contributes to a more harmonious household.

Interestingly, I'm coming to realize how insightful my older sister was many, many years ago when we were teenagers.  She completely disapproved of the notion of "dinner music."  She always insisted, "If you want to listen to music, you should listen to music."  But the notion of making Mozart into background noise whilst the family ate seemed sacrilegious to her.  Nowadays, when I want to hear something, I turn the volume up and listen to it properly.  Of course, that only lasts a minute until somebody else in the house turns it down, and makes it into background noise.  At times, like those, I often prefer to turn the music off rather than struggle to appreciate it.

These sorts of experiences convince me that I'm unlikely to get tired of the music any time soon.

Equipment Yup, Music Nope.

It's been a year between hardware purchases for me. A streak I broke just this week with the acquisition of a step up transformer for my hybrid system and a couple of pairs of ICs for my all tube system that I had put on the back burner. I continue to read the forums and the mags to keep up to date on user and industry trends but sometimes it feels more like work than the play it used to be. Why? Because I'd rather be listening to music in the fully immersed way I normally take and the gear being printed is no longer aspirational for me. In the one year, the longest I went without a vinyl purchase was a little over a month. A CD purchase two months and a digital download purchase less than a week.

I think what Chadh said is pretty cool.
I think things are interlinked, perhaps what's going on in life can stop you disconnecting from life through listening to music.

I have never lost my interest in music in general but I can overdose on some types. Funk, lately, for example tends not to do much for me.

I have seriously overdosed on audiophilia, though, where any system sounds like cr*p compared to live. This happened some time ago, and I listened happily to a small mono cassette recorder and clock radio for a couple of years before I developed any kind of enthusiasm for reproduced sound again. During this time I still enjoyed live music and PA sound, with all its warts.

I did lose some interest back in the 90's completely during the transitional years. Now back to tubes and my coveted bedroom system, I really have enjoyed my evenings much more. Great point about the main rig as I hate to compete with the household, so I retreat to the bedroom. It also helps me realize just how good the big rig can sound when it is really kicked up
OTH, I miss my Satellite radio as I cut out some costs...It help provide endless avenues to new music.

i definitely go thru phases where i o-d on audiophilia, even when i still partake of my daily a/c fix.     except for tuna,  it's been over a year since i have tried any other gear.  (tho i did recently buy forty of those peerless india drivers, so i can make a linesource, for when i move into a real house.   :green:  )

and, i must completely disagree re: audio systems sounding like crap compared to live.  much as i love hearing live music, i also love a decent audio rig, and many times the live sounds worse.

as far as getting sick of music itself, well, i can remember only once where i went for two weeks w/o turning on the rig; usually i make time to listen to at least something every day.  and, music is always playing, even when i am not in the sweet spot listening.   the two-week period started on 9/11/2001.  i remember fighting traffic (before noon) on the way out of dc to come home, after the horrific ewents of the day; spending the afternoon at my kid's elementary school up in fredneck county, md, waiting for school to close, to take them home.  it was really eerie.  and, i had no desire to turn on the stereo for a couple weeks.  when it finally got turned on, there were a few folks over, we were talking about 9/11, and i went to the rig and put on randy newman's "political science" and cranked it up really loud.  it was AWESOME, and i haven't been w/o music since then.  last week, the a/c went out in my carriage-house apt during the hottest week of the summer, and w/temps ~90 inside, and humidity not far behind, the rig had to stay off, due to heat load.  even swapping in s/s amps wouldn't cut it.   8)  i made do w/my portable ge superadio to get my fm fix, but, boy, was it ever nice to turn back on the rig when the a/c finally got fixed!   :thumb:

Political Science Lyrics
Artist(Band):Randy Newman

No one likes us-I don't know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around, even our old friends put us down
Let's drop the big one and see what happens

We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful and they're hateful
They don't respect us-so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them

Asia's crowded and Europe's too old
Africa is far too hot
And Canada's too cold
And South America stole our name
Let's drop the big one
There'll be no one left to blame us

We'll save Australia
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin', too

Boom goes London and boom Paris
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We'll set everybody free
You'll wear a Japanese kimono babe
And there'll be Italian shoes for me

They all hate us anyhow
So let's drop the big one now
Let's drop the big one now

I should have specified what I meant by "live" - I meant anything acoustic, like orchestral or  unamplified jazz ensemble (sometimes).
I don't often hear PA systems sound as good as half-decent home hi fi.

Absolutely Ben - other things take precedence at times. It's fine...whatever direction is happiest for you is best.

So, with that attitude, I don't sweat it when I flinch from music.  Nor do I wonder when I desire it once again.

Since I bought an iPod, I sometimes listen 6-8 hours a day to music, and I do get " burned out "   , but I usually attribute it to listener fatigue, thinking " I would love to be listening to this on a set of Avalon Eidelon speakers".

When I'm someplace with background music I get annoyed for some reason.  I honestly can't stand music as background or auditory wallpaper. When I listen I like to concentrate on the music and experience it fully. I guess I'm just weird because most people seem to like background music.
