Oppo BDP-83 Region Free!
« on: 10 Sep 2009, 10:15 pm »
I have been asked about Region Free mods for the Oppo BDP-83.  We do not personally offer this service, but we have found a company that does and who is willing to work with us to make this option available to our customers.

Systematiq Corporation
tel 813.944.3254
fax 813.944.3272
support@systematiqonline.com
www.mySystematiq.com

They offer the Oppo BDP-83, new, including Region Free mods for $600.  We can offer modified units to our int'l customers, including region free modified player for the $600 cost of player + mods + shipping.  We can offer the region free mod to a customer supplied unit, only as part of our modifications, for an additional charge of $120.

If you only want to have the unit region-free modified, then please contact Systematiq directly.

Thank you,

Dan W.

Hello Dan,

Thanks for putting up the sticky! We're happy to be able to offer this service to modWright customers. This is a 100% reversible modification that works for all regions and zones Blu-Ray, DVD-A, standard DVD.

- updating the firmware to the most recent Oppo approved non-beta version
- installing the hardware region-free and zone-free modifications
- guaranteed compatibility with the latest Oppo approved firmware
- retesting the Oppo unit in all formats to verify functionality
- repacking, shipping out via insured UPS service to modWright

FYI, the price Dan mentioned is only for modWright customers. If you are interested in purchasing a a region free Oppo without modWright
mods the price will be $630+freight.

Also, please note installing the modification does void the manufacturer's warranty, though the modification is easily reversible and in no way is involved in the a/v signal path of the player. We are happy to provide technical support service for all region and zone related questions / troubleshooting. With nearly 400 units shipped to date in six continents, we have only had one failure thus far, for which we personally assisted the customer in successfully resolving the issue.

UPDATE We are also accepting pre-orders for SE units as well. We are currently sold out until approximately the third week of December.

Also, Oppo units with optional RS232 control input are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Best,

JP

Will this be a 'true' region free mod, or does it require manual switching at startup? Thanks for the info.

JP78,

I'm not familiar with the RS232 control input, can you describe what that is?

Many thanks.

Hello all,

I apologize for not replying within this thread...I had not subscribed previously and have not been checking in regularly. If you need an immediate response, please go ahead and send an email to support (@) systematiqonline.com with OPPO as part of the title; it will be forwarded to me and I will be sure to reply.

roscoeiii - the RS232 is an input for automation control systems such as Crestron, Control4, AMX, etc. It is extremely handy for users that have their systems designed / installed by custom integrators. If you're not using such a system then you're better off saving your money.

HDJK - The modification is automatically region-free for certain formats, but requires manually changing regions for other formats (though still 100% compatible with all regions). Changing the region is a 10 second process that requires pressing two buttons on the remote in sequence. Our modification does include audible confirmation to make the process as simple as possible.

Best,

JP

Thanks for the reply JP, I appreciate it.

Am I right in guessing that a true region free mod will not be available for Blu-ray, period? Because in all the hardware mods for all the brands so far it always requires manual switching/rebooting.

HDJK - You are correct that the feature of automatic region-detection will likely not be available for Blu-Ray for any make or model in the near future (if ever); the very nature of Blu-Ray region protection requires the player's software to boot in a certain zone...there is no way to change the zone on the fly without rebooting the system's software.  I hope this makes sense.

Best,

JP
