CineMag CMOB-2S Transformers
« on: 15 Jul 2009, 02:26 am »
I set a pair of 600:600 ohm CineMag CMOB-2S transformers between the Cornet2 and the Clarinet for a nice increase in presence. Living breathing presence.

These transformers cost about $51 shipped.

Pat, I don't understand.  How is this device wired and what does it do?  Does this just function to boost gain, i.e. present more voltage to the Clarinet from the Cornet2? :?

These are 1:1 so there is no gain. I bought them to couple my DAC to the line pre with. It allows the DAC to see a small load so the deal is. They are output trnaformers so you can use them wired from the output to the RCAs in the DAC, or the Cornet2, and have transformer output.

Why would you want it?

I really like what happened with the DAC so I tokk this breadboard mobile deal and sat it between the phon and line pre and there it gave a nice increase in solid presence. I would wire them directly in the Cornet2 but I have no skills with chassis drilling so I will mount them in an aluminum chassis with nice RCAs and use them that way.

I will wire them to the DAC though. That should be easy enough.

If you set them on a breadboard, wire the primary[input] to on RCA, the secondary[output] to the other RCA, then you have one channel. Do it again, two channels.

I would think this would also act like the isolation transformers used to kill off ground loops in microphones and between electronics in the pro audio crowd.

Besides adding more air, does it do anything regarding changing timbre, sound stage presence or bass control?

Approximately how much do these critters cost?

I might like to try a pair between my preamp and amp to see if the amp likes the lower impedence better than the Clarinet direct.

Let us know how it works out during the weeks and months to follow.

They do reduce hum. timbre is the big thing with these transformers. Weight, bass, no increase in air, I think.

The best way I can phrase it is taht it delvers living, breathing presence. Timbre being a part of that, naturally.

I can tell you right now I love them. In comparison to say the tube biffer I have...the tube buffer does this spacial shimmery thing. Big hifi audio spcial trickery which is really enjoyable. But the transformers in combo with a tube pre is a big jump up.
