MFSL CD's.....Are they worth the price?
« on: 22 Jul 2009, 08:33 pm »
I am really curious about this subject. Are the CD's from MFSL worth the high price? If I'm paying that much I really want to hear a remarkable difference. What is it that makes them cost 3 to 4 times more than RB? I have heard HDCD on my Cary CDP-1 which is an HDCD player and really didn't hear much difference.Maybe my ears are just getting worn out!!! If you own or have heard these, let me know what you think.Thanks.

I'll jump in here, since I'm not sure that Decal will post the question elsewhere, and I think it's a really good question.

I've heard a few of the MFSL CDs and, in general and to my surprose, it's been quite a mix.  I've found a few to sound little better than the standard manufacturer versions.  And I've found the MFSL Patricia Barbara hybrid discs to sound excellent on both the SACD layer and the redbook layer.

A friend of mine speaks highly of Japanese-pressed CD's (he has a sizable collection), and from the couple of those I've heard, I concur with him.  As he says, it's easy to get hooked on those pressings.  I think the website he uses is cdjapan.co.jp.  [I've never ordered from them.]

??  Not an issue.  You sent me a Private Message and I replied that my own HiRez Circle was created to discuss non-cd software, and wanted you to know that I didn't want the Music Circle folks thinking I was poaching, so I moved this topic.  It's an internal thing (which is why I sent you the response via PM).  Let's get this thread back on subject.

I like MFSL cd's but don't especially find them more than 10% better than their regularly pressed counterparts.  Usually the difference is slightly better mastering, and their gold cd's tend to sound better on certain transports.  Most of my MFSL purchases have been SACD, however (although back in the day the MFSL of old was taking a lot of my vinyl dollars for their UHQR's, etc.  :)   )
