bcd-1 / bda-1 direct to 4b-sst squared

could the bcd-1 and/or bda-1 be connected via xlr cables directly to the 4b-sst squared without using a preamplifier and using the br-2 remote for volume control ...

That BR-2 remote vol. button (at least mine is very sensitive)I sure wouldn't
want to chance it.The BDA-1,I don't think there is a vol.
I know just touching my vol. button,if held a split second to long can jump up
the VOLUME big time.I wouldn't.

Hi Nikon,

No the BDA-1 or BCD-1 can not be used direct to a power amp.

No, there is no way to connect BCD1 or BDA1 directly to power amps because they dont have volume control.
I borrowed from my friend Audio Aero Capitole Signature Edition CDP (around 8 kEUR here in Europe)that has a built in volume regulation and it worked fine. This CDP has tubes in output stage and if I`m not wrong the volume control is in analogue domain.
First thing i suppose you were going to ask me is how it compares to BCD1?
Well, this wonderful CDP costs 3xBCD1. It is awesome, very transparent and a bit softer sounding than BCD1. The soundstage is very big.
Both of them are great sounding players. It is impossible to say which one is better. This little difference in sound to me can not be described as better, rather as a matter of taste which should be payed 3 times as much.
Even though price proposed to me was way below the list price I am keeeping my baby BCD1.
The only drawback of connecting CDP directly to poweramps is that it can be the only source at a time.
Maybe this is a good idea to integrate volume control (in analogue domain) in some future BCD2 or BDA2.

Cheers!

I have considered this as well.

Currently my "Logitech Transporter" is the DAC , This also has volume control.

If I went to the BDA-1 then what I considered was what CONSTANT level would I prefer to run my system at, and could I get on with only ONE constant volume......

There are a number of options to do this.

First, Running the "PRO" Bryston amps which have a gain control (note not sure if this is off to 0dB). On the older ST series this is on the front panel, in the SST it is on the rear.

OR use a fixed antenuation interconnect.

These are just thoughts they do mean it is possible BUT with restrictions, IF you were to go down this route I would think it best as a stop gap until a pre amp can be afforded.........

If the BCD-1 could have the firmware updated to give variable output or fixed output option that would be great.  ALSO options for fixed antenuation output..........(I run a day and night setting in my system, -15dB for night setting)

The gain reduction on the Pro series trim pots is only 14dB or thereabouts, not nearly enough to use as a master volume control.  There are inline attenuators as an option (as you mention) or I think Bryston can modify the gain on the Pro series pots.

Hi Drummer,

I just installed my new BP26P this weekend and the BR2 on mine works like a charm.  When you hold down the button the volume knob on the 26 rotates up or down gradually at a constant speed.

I'm definitely going to be balanced all the way when all is said and done.  I decided to install things step by step so I can experience the difference each upgrade makes.  The 7B's went in over a week ago, the BP26P this past weekend so far.  I've kept everything else as is including the single ended cables.  Next will be a new digital source which will either be a Cary CD306, Esoteric x-05 or SA-50 or the BCD-1 (if I decide I don't want to go SACD).  After that will be cable upgrades, IC first then SC.  I'll save power stuff for last.  Anyway, so far so good with the 7's and 26.

Regards,

Bill

Bill, Take a look at my Pic's above posts.
The AES-EBU XLR single connected from BCD-1 Digital out put to BDA-1 AES-EBU in put is the Best Sound.

Then you can connect your BDA-1 Balanced to your BP26.

XLR all the way

Enjoy
