4B-ST 17 versus 19
« on: 18 Jun 2009, 02:40 pm »
Hi everyone,

I just bought a Bryston BP-25 and am looking to pair it with a 4B-* to power my Totem Acoustic Mani-2s. I've been offered a 4B-ST silver 17 inch version for $1400 shipped. I don't know much about the 17 inch version. Is the only difference from the 19 inch version the size? Is $1400 a good price? I could get a 4B-NRB for $715 which is quite a difference. How much of a difference are the two amps sonically?

Thanks in advance!

No difference only the plate is less wide.

I would go with the ST and yes it is a good price as long as it is in pristine shape and has a good amount of warrantee left. This is a great amp.

The difference in sound of the ST series and NRB series is not really huge however I believe that the ST models had better S/N ratios and less distortion but James could give you more details.

HI,

Yes my vote would be go with the ST Series.  We started using the new Motorola output devices with the ST Series and it is a major improvement over the NRB Series.

Hi and thanks for the advice. I've decided to go with the ST option. However I just spoke with the seller and he says he apparently misplaced the bill of sale for the amp during a house move. Does this mean the warranty is invalid? Should I proceed with the purchase all things considered?

Thanks,
Marc

Hi Marc,

Depending on the age of the amp it may be affected.  Usually the store will keep a copy. Get me the serial number and the store purchased from.

Hi James,

The date code is 0049 and the serial number is 450544. He says that he is the second owner and he lost the receipt in a move so he isn't sure where it was originally purchased from. Is this enough information?

Thanks so much for your help,
Marc

If I am correct, the "00" would mean it was built in 2000. If that is the case, you do not need a receipt.

James will have to check this however because I am not 100% sure.

Hi Marc,

The unit is older so no receipt required.

Bryston will only warranty Bryston products purchased through authorized Bryston dealers. Bryston products with a date code of 0608 (February 2006) or higher (date code format is "yyww", where "yy" is the two least significant digits of the year and "ww" is the week of the year) must be accompanied by a copy of the bill-of-sale from a Bryston authorized dealer to qualify for warranty service.

Great choice!

I started with the same one and loved it. After a brief time with it, I bought the new square series. I am sure you will start here and move your way up the chain slowly like most of us do and I am not finished yet.
