I have a dedicated listening room, but....
The biggest advantage is being able to listen to what I want, when I want. The 2nd biggest advantage is the lack of outside noise. Although the room/setup follows the Cardias recipe for room proportion and speaker/listening locations, the room effects is somewhat minimal. Even adding six GIK 244 panels did very little to improve imaging, bass, etc. Some of this I attribute to my speakers. The cabinets are transmission lines that roll off bass response at the same rate of room gain and the single drivers are 8 inch diameter with no whizzer, so they beam the highs (less room interaction).
My previous room was a living room of similar size/shape, and although surfaces were much harder the sound was very much the same.
I've heard a few dipole designs. The "wall of sound" presentation (versus a more defined image) is not my cup of tea, but the dynamic driver based designs are typically very dynamic. One problem is getting sufficient open space behind the speakers (normally about 5 feet is recommended). Another issue I have is the front wave and back waves being out of phase (this just isn't how most sounds are naturally produced).
And I don't care for MTM, as it requires the listener to be at ear height to avoid out of phase signals from the woofers.
