speakers

I have a pair of AV123 X-Static speakers that I am not yet satisified with. The manufacture has 2 subs available the one in the same family as the speakers & the other sub twice as big. If I buy a sub, should I stick with the smaller sub that is in the same family of speakers. Also if ultimately I decide to upgrade the speakers would the Song Tower be an upgrade or a lateral move

Thanks for any input

The Salk Song Tower would be a fine upgrade.

You can research the Salk speakers in their circle here on AC.

If more bass is an objective, you might also want to look at the Salk HT2-TL. Lots of talk on them from Lonewolf's link. :thumb:

So what exactly are you not satisfied with?  Being small speakers, they will naturally be limited on bass output and overall output (spls).  One or more subs would help on both counts.  Depending on room size, room layout, music vs. HT use, tastes, etc.  two small subs might be better than one larger sub.  Look for low frequency extension in the sub's specifications and non-symetrical room/setup conditions.  Most associate sealed designs with tighter bass.  Check out the subwoofer reviews at ecoustics.com.

I heard the prototype of your speaker as it was being designed, and I must say, you are going to have to spend some major $$ to upgrade.  Those X Statics are the best bang for the buck of anything that I have yet to hear. Keep playing with the placement and add some room treatments.  If you seek more in the lowest octave of bass, I'd look into the GR-Research/Rythmic servo sub.  It was built to go with your midwoofers.

Of course all this advice you are receiving is assuming that you either have a custom designed room or you are planning on investing in some room treatment. I got a whole octave of bass after doing so and a lot more benefits as well. It won't suddenly provide you with subterranean bass but it will solve the issues of boomy bass, etc...due to SBIR, etc...

Anand.

I have read that speakers are the most important and room treatments are the second most important item to improving the sound a system produces. I do not have a custom designed room. My thoughts on acoustic improvements are that they will come at a lot of visual cost to my room. I do not have a dedicated room so I use my living room

Thank you

I have a dedicated listening room, but....

The biggest advantage is being able to listen to what I want, when I want.  The 2nd biggest advantage is the lack of outside noise.  Although the room/setup follows the Cardias recipe for room proportion and speaker/listening locations, the room effects is somewhat minimal.  Even adding six GIK 244 panels did very little to improve imaging, bass, etc.  Some of this I attribute to my speakers.  The cabinets are transmission lines that roll off bass response at the same rate of room gain and the single drivers are 8 inch diameter with no whizzer, so they beam the highs (less room interaction).

My previous room was a living room of similar size/shape, and although surfaces were much harder the sound was very much the same.

I've heard a few dipole designs.  The "wall of sound" presentation (versus a more defined image) is not my cup of tea, but the dynamic driver based designs are typically very dynamic.  One problem is getting sufficient open space behind the speakers (normally about 5 feet is recommended).  Another issue I have is the front wave and back waves being out of phase (this just isn't how most sounds are naturally produced).

And I don't care for MTM, as it requires the listener to be at ear height to avoid out of phase signals from the woofers.

If you get the Salks you might not find that you want / need a sub??
