Blu tack attack: Improving that cd player!

I purchased some blu tack on a thesis that vibration damping could help.

It does!   Here is what I did:

Around all the capacitors, I made a collar of blu-tack between in at the pc board.

On the cd transport, I put a lot of blu tack into every space that blu tack would go, without interfering with the drawer mechanism.

The difference was noticable:

Better lower treble and treble extension

More solidity and focus :o

This was a killer tweak that cost a few pennies, and took all of 1/2 hour.

Ian,

Many thanks for sharing your experience on low cost dampening tweeks.

As a caveat to us Yanks, I'll comment that the Bostik 'Blue Tak' is generally only available to us through 'audiophile' providers at a cost of $9.99 for a 1 ounce slab, or at 'super discount' of $6.99. Some have commented that rope caulk is a good altenative. The problem of using rope caulk is that its formulation makes its removal somewhat problematic. A friend used rope caulk to isolate his speakers from the stands, and when he removed it managed to rip some veneer right off the speaker, which poster putty is specifically formulated not to do. But there are low cost alternatives to the specific Bostik product in the States. Most Stateside stationary, art supply and general stores carry 'sticky-tac' or similarly named poster puttys that IMO are fully equivalent at around $1/oz.

Thanks again for your comments,
Occam

Office Depot is one source--

As noted, other office supply stores should have something similar.

Try Plast-i-Clay, too.  It's only about $1.50-$2.50 per lb pack, or about 1/3 the cost of Mortite or Dennis brand rope caulking clay.  Way cheaper than Blu-tak, too.

I get mine online at http://allartsupplies.com/item.cfm?articleid=120

I use the stuff on/in everything I have and, for the most part, really dampens vibrations for the better.

That is indicative of how much pure BS is in this hobby.  Blu-tack= 99 pence here [that's about $1.70]  full price.  But the same thing as "Audiophile supply"  gets a markup of almost 1000%.  This happens with anything that can be applied to audiophiles.  Cables, tweaks, and otherwise dirt cheap materials are given the high-end gullibility pricing scheme and lo and behold, massive profits.

What's next?  audiophile bottled water at $10.00  a pint?  Audiophile pine wood chips?  Audiophile wax rags?
