Blown fuse help
« on: 30 Jul 2009, 12:13 am »
Hey guys, I know I've been away for a long time. You are the only ones I thought could help me. My dilemma: Forte Model 3 keeps blowing fuses (both of them)on right channel only during power up. Set-up: Martin Logan SL3's bi-amping Forte Model 3 for lows and Threshold Model s/300 on highs. No preamp. Running out straight from TV to amps to speakers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it blow fuses every start up, every 5th start up, every 20th start up, or what?
Is the TV up and running when you start up the Forte Model 3 or are you turning both on at the same time?
Do you turn on both Fortes or the Fortes and the Thresholds at the same time OR do you turn on each amp seperately?
Is there an active crossover in the circuit?  If so, is that up and running when you turn on the Forte or do you turn them both on at the same time?

Where are the fuses AC power, DC power rail, speaker output...? Did you check the woofer for a short?

Give Jeff a call at St Louis Computronics.  314-277-6393. He's the man when it comes to fixing audio problems.
Let him know that you're one of the Gateway guys.

WOAH!! Thats a whole lotta questions to be asking a newb all at once. Lets start at:

1: the "speaker output" ( I believe) fuses have blown on the last two power ups. 2.5amp fuses  (5  fuses total) 2-Left channel, 2 right channel(all internal), one external for power.
2: The TV was up and running both times. (NO TV=NO Audio)
3: generally the amps are powered up separately. The Threshold was on at the time.
4: The Martin Logan SL3 has no "need" for and active x-over. separate posts for woofer and stator.

Joe:
(turn Forte off) Disconnect speaker cable leads at amp end of the bad channel and measure the DC resistance accross the speaker leads (still connected at the woofer end). It should measure between 3-7 ohms. If you get a dead short, then test the speaker cables and woofer separately. If both check out OK. You will probably have to take the amp to Jeff.

sorry to take so long to reply Chris. I am waiting to get an Ohm meter from my uncle and I will check the connection right away.

Thanks
